There are some pleasant surprises going into the archives from seven years ago. During the entire 2013, I only have seven images of dragonflies and damselflies compared to several thousand in 2009, 2019, and 2020. Of the seven in 2013, none were posted probably because I didn't even know Flickr existed. This Widow Skimmer wasn't bad at all, but in 2013, I was well into the Bluebird Restoration Project and, with that, birds in general. It was also the year that we traveled the west extensively: I added 54 birds to my "list" (a note pad). In 2014, I added my last new bird, giving me today's total of 163.
Btw, summer seems to have officially ended today: a low of 42 and a high of 62. Thanks, Canada. Pretty soon, I'll have to go back to jeans!
Following shift change this morning (June 3) the adult that just finished the night shift slips quietly out into the river and gets ready to head off fishing for the day leaving the partner on the nest for the day shift.

In coloration, the Widow Skimmer is very similar to the Common Whitetail which is very similar to the Eight-spotted Skimmer which is really similar to the Twelve Spotted Skimmer and so it goes until you have spots before your eyes. The females of these species are all quite different.
I used vignetting with this beauty because it became an even better composition and more pleasing considering the bland background. Normally, I complain about all the crud in the backgrounds for dragons and damsels: in this instance, however, the water was just ... there and not at all enticing. It's only the third time I've used vignettes. Just an added attraction to focus the eye...
