Sporting a heacode that suggests it has worked the 3.57pm Bristol - Plymouth parcels recently (and turned on a convoluted triangle too), the once leader of the fifty-strong class, D400, is now ignominiously placed in last spot, courtesy of the TOPS renumbering system.

Class 50 unit 50050 draws in to Bristol Temple Meads with a rake of Mk1 coaches on what was possibly an empty stock move (my notes say it was a test train). It's not the Western many would have wanted, but even so the class was still new enough to WR metals to cause a bit of intrigue, as evidenced by the spotters further down the platform.

Bristol Bath Road shed (BR / 82A) stands in the background, with what's likely to be one of its allocation of Peak class 46s and, behind it, what looks like a Western. I never did find out what the Western was and my notes aren't detailed enough to identify the Peak either. I do know however that I snapped Western 1009 and Hymek 7028 on shed immediately before this shot, but sadly the slide never made the cut and was consigned to the bin - what a pity today's software wasn't available then!

My next port of call would be Newport, where I was lucky enough to snap 1200 'Falcon' working through the centre lines with a mixed freight - the only time I manage a half-decent shot of it.

I spent the night on Cardiff Central station where my destination on the 20th was Barry Scrapyard to snap the withdrawn steam locos. Oddly enough I was to get a foretaste in the early daylight hours when Brush 47080 'Titan' rolled through Central station hauling four ex-GWR locomotives 7202, 4942, 4144 and 3738, in the direction of Newport. Destination at the time was unknown, but I'm now presuming it was Didcot where the locos would be earmarked for eventual restoration.

A previously unscanned image, it took several attempts to make something of this slide, so this is about as good as it gets!

The DH.82a Tiger Moth, a successful training aircraft from the 1930s and 40s. More than 8,000 were built, around 250 of which are still in use today, including this one being used for pleasure flights at Duxford. As with most tandem seated trainers of the era, the pilot sits behind the student or passenger.

Despite the silver paint, the aircraft is almost entirely constructed from wood and doped linen.

An image uploaded for historical value catches a rare (for me) Warship diesel-hydraulic on manoeuvres - in this case 824 'Highflyer' undertaking a light engine move at Bristol Temple Meads.

Introduced in 1960, this locomotive would be one of the last of the class to be withdrawn on 3rd December 1972, and would be cut up at Swindon Works in June 1975. They were designated class 42 under TOPS but, being deemed non-standard, none of the class were ever renumbered to carry the '42' prefix.

No cropping involved. The original image, thankfully I didn't clip the tail but would have liked a bit more clear space on the right.

G-ANEN - De Havilland D.H. 82A Tiger Moth II & De Havilland DH82A Tiger Moth ‘N6466’ (G-ANKZ). Along the north side of the British Army’s main train area on Salisbury Plain, only a 20 feet wide unpaved perimeter road (and a fence!) separate the ranges from some stunning scenery.

There are few places that capture the emptiness of the area than the lonely clumps of beech trees that pepper the landscape, some just a hundred metres from the boundary fence.

Just beyond the boundary fence there is an old grass airstrip and a single hangar but as I was setting up the shots for the surrounding clumps of beech trees, I noticed 5 biplanes parked up alongside the hangar all with their engines running. As I stood and watched, one by one, they started to taxi onto the airstrip and take off before doing an impromptu and totally unexpected formation flying display with just me as the audience!

I googled the registration numbers of the planes to see what type of aircraft they were and discovered they were each members of the Tiger 9 aeronautical display team who had clearly met up for a training flight just minutes before I arrived

Meet “Pete” - this beautifully preserved de Havilland DH-82A Tiger Moth is a living link to the golden age of flight. Designed in the 1930s, the Tiger Moth became the RAF’s primary trainer throughout WWII - the aircraft where thousands of pilots earned their wings. Today, G-ARAZ still takes to the skies in classic yellow livery, evoking a time when open cockpits, canvas wings and the thrill of flight ruled the skies.
