Taken on a drive out of Yellowknife, Northwest Territory on the Ingraham Trail. Fall colors were pretty much at their peak in this area.

Kilgore Falls - part of Rocks State Park, Maryland; a cool respite on a hot day although not always as quiet and serene as this.
On a hot weekend the pool at the base of the falls can be filled with people of all ages enjoying the fresh, cold water.
One of my top favorite birds and for once, I was in the right place right time. Not only did I get the strike, but this bird actually came toward me (instead of those other possibilities, e.g., butt end, peeling off away). So expect a few more from the series; this is early on as the fish just starts to be visible. BTW, you really want to view this one "L"arge.
The Western Meadowhawk (Sympetrum occidentale) is a dragonfly of the family Libellulidae, native to western North America. In adult form, the Meadowhawk has a length of 1 1/4 to 1 5/8 inches. The male is shown here. Females are olive to golden brown and marked similarly.
"Meadowhawk" is one of the better names given to dragonflies. It does indeed fly over meadows and grasslands and, so long as there's fresh water, it's the perfect habitat. Now, Skimmers were named that because they fly over water when out for prey. I have seen both mate in oak grass fields, and that means that they're within 100 yards of water. Laying eggs, which must be done in water, starts with 10 minutes of mating. That's 9 minutes longer than "courtship."
Because habitat and behavior is pretty much the same for dragonflies, this is most of the information that you will find in books unless the descriptions are just copied from dragon to dragon.
I found this brand new dragonfly (already missing part of one wing) as I rounded the lagoon. He had recently emerged and was vibrant and new and ready to play out his role for the next six months.
