As you can clearly see the fungus has really made a meal of this one. look at an enlarged view and you will see the image covered by the tell tale thread like marks. The fungus has been cleaned off by wiping with a soft cloth moistened in isopropyl alcohol. The damage to the emulsion can be clearly seen. The damage is beyond dealing with in Photoshop!

Quite why this image is so much more effected than others on the same strip I know not!

An unusual and surprising move from Lime Street to Edge Hill Downhill C.S. with 81011 heading a single Mk3 coach, presumed to be a demic removed from a London service. June 1987.

A visit to Crewe nowadays will reveal very little change from this May 1986 view of the south end of the station. Passing, on the Down Fast, is Class 81 No. 81011 with an ECS working. The locomotive was designed by British Thomson-Houston (BTH) , and released into traffic in December 1960. It was actually built by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon, sub contractors to Associated Electrical Industries (AEI) who had earlier acquired BTH. It was withdrawn in February 1990. Feeling so cyber loved and spoilt today.

Something from over 48 years ago! 81 011 getting ready to roar on the 18.14 Euston - Northampton.

81011 was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland station, having called with the 06.20 Birmingham International to Lancaster service on June 30th 1986. At the time this service that called at Leyland at around 8.15 am, was the only electric-hauled passenger train to call there.

The 81 had been built under contract from AEI, by BRCW at Smethwick in December 1960 numbered E3013. The loco was renumbered to 81011 in January 1973 and was withdrawn from service in April 1989. Coopers Metals at Attercliffe reduced 81011 to eighty tons of scrap metal in December 1991.

Have I gone too far?

A few weeks ago myself, Matt Csenge, and Vinnie Fusca were talking about building Budd cars. flic.kr/p/qx1Znt

Now the bodies of the Budd cars were all finished in stainless steel. It makes for a very eye catching rail car. Something that normal light gray just can't replicate. But there is a LEGO color that comes close, Metalic Silver ( www.bricklink.com/browseList.asp?colorID=67&itemType=P ). Unfortunately the range of metallic silver parts is too limited. And while there have been some of the custom LEGO chromers who have produced parts in this color they are prohibitively expensive. So borrowing an idea from another AFOL the suggestion was brought up to try painting them ourselves. And so this is my first experiment into this dark, forbidden art.

I have done some model building outside of LEGO and am experienced in painting but this is my first time trying to recolor bricks. I used Tamiya acrylic paint and an airbrush.

My real intent here on this first experiment was to see how close I could get the color. the bricks in the middle are official LEGO bricks in metallic silver, Yes they did make 1x8 bricks. The 2x4 brick on the right is finished in Tamiya Flat Aluminum. The 2x4 bricks on the left are finished in Tamiya Chrome Silver. It's hard to tell from the photo but of the two I think the Chrome silver is a pretty close match. Tamiya does have a few other variants of silver that I have not tried but I feel the chrome silver is well within acceptable color tolerance.

While I'm pretty confident about the color I still need to do some testing with how the paint affects clutch, the paint adds thickness to the brick, and paint durability.

The big question though is, Is this a step to far? Is this no longer in the spirit of LEGO?

Class 81 number 81 011 at Preston, 29-6-74.

81011 heading south through Norton Bridge, on the Up Slow with an ECS train. 5th September 1988.

81 011 departs from Milton Keynes on the 18.14 Euston - Northampton.

Class 81's were one of the first AC electrics operated in the UK and 25 were built for the southern end of the WCML. Once these pioneers proved themselves the best bits from these and the other 4 classes 82-85 were used to develop the Class 86 the standard electric loco.

From then on the 81's were relegated to secondary duties.

The mid day Bristol Glasgow train was entrusted to 81011 on 3rd August 1984, seen at Wolverhampton.

Over the years I have photographed many Class 81's at New Street they were daily visitors, here is 81013 running out of platform 2 it went and stabled by New Street signal box. seen here that day were; 25135. 31238. 45004/22/33/42/45/72. 46015/43. 47034/119/138/166/167/305/323/336/367/369/457/539. 50030/35. 81011. 85021. 86006. 86214/221/245. 87001/5/22/26/31. 17/06/1978.

81011 leaves Northampton with 5B08 ECS to Wembley, the roarer had arrived 20 minutes earlier with 1B08 1745 Euston - Northampton. April 17th 1984 was a poor night for the "Cobblers" with 1B06 86319, 1B07 86209 and 1B09 86323.

81011 was stood at Warrington Bank Quay awaiting departure with a well-filled Glasgow Central to Birmingham New Street relief service formed of Mk.I stock on June 30th 1979.

The 81 was originally ordered by British Railways from AEI as part of an order of 25 locomotives designated by BR as Type AL1, but the actual construction was subcontracted to BRCW at Smethwick, the loco was new in December 1960 numbered E3013 (Works No.1095). It became 81011 in January 1973. The remaining small fleet of twenty-two Class 81's were gradually withdrawn from service during the period 1983-1991. 81011 had an active life of just over twenty-eight years, it was withdrawn from service in April 1989 and scrapped in December 1991.

81011 has just arrived at Northampton with 1B01 0925 Euston - Northampton "daytime Cobbler" (formed of a half rake) on March 13th 1987.

81011 is seen waiting to depart Crewe with a train to the south on the 10th May 1986, a day which would have stretched resources, as the FA Cup Final was being played at Wembley between Liverpool and Everton and there were over 20 additionals run that day. 87010 stands alongside with another southbound service.

Still with domino headcodes 81010 arrives at Leighton with 1B07 1720 Euston - Northampton on March 24th 1983. 81011 and 81022 were also out on evening Cobblers that early spring evening

Class 47336 at Coventry on Saturday 7 July 1984. It had arrived on 1M14 11.40SO Poole-Manchester, but failed in the station and was unable to continue. I think my pic was taken as the train arrived, and all the enthusiasts on the right were getting ready to board the train for some 47/3 haulage to New St or beyond.

Disappointment was short, however, as the train eventually continued behind 81021, which had arrived in Coventry on the 09.40SO Edinburgh-Poole (to be replaced on that train by 47600). I later returned from New St behind 81011 on the 15.40 SO Liverpool-Poole - so had had a pretty good day!

47336 had been new, as D1817, in March 1965. It was withdrawn from service in June 1993 and was scrapped at CF Booth, in Rotherham, in November 1993.
