With mainly stacks and some freight on the rear, NS Harrisburg to Norfolk (Portlock Yard) heads down the former Southern Ry toward Lynchburg. The Central of Georgia GE leading.
The last train of the trip was much like the first; Central of Georgia Heritage by classic signals. We had seen the #8101 go north on the KNWA the day before but figured it would trail on the way back south. To our delight the power was wyed with the train arriving into Elmore around 10am and a crew called for 15:00 to bring it to Gilbert. Josh and I thought it'd be well after dark by the time we saw it with how slow trains ran the previous four days on the Guyandotte. We decided to make the trek into the rock cut and signals at 'Lincoln' anyways where we shot U86 and #821 and decided to wait til last light for the chance #812 with the CofG would show up. Luckily the dispatcher set up a meet with #812 & #821 at Mada which gave the sun time to swing around to illuminate the signals but it'd only be another 30 minutes before the sun dipped behind the mountain! No doubt the light would be better in the summer but you wont find me hiking and climbing on the rock cut then with the amount of snakes we saw.

This one is actually somewhat clean. Central of Georgia unit on freight coming up the H-Line. I was somewhat nervous about the wire spools but it appears to be for a new set of crossing signals and no sign of replacement for the N&W-era position lights.
NS 8101, the Central of Georgia heritage unit, leads Jacksonville bound NS 321 through the wide open s-curve near Barnesville, GA on the NS Griffin District. Trailing second is NS 1070, the Wabash heritage unit.
The Central of Georgia heritage unit found itself right at home on the July morning as it traverses the former Central of Georgia trackage, now the NS Griffin District. Many of the former Central of Georgia lines that existed under the Southern and currently exist under Norfolk Southern have either been downgraded heavily, abandoned or see minimal amounts of traffic. The NS Griffin district sees 2 regular road train movements daily along with a few local movements daily. It's quite unfortunate that this lines sees such minimal traffic as it offers several cool photo spots such as this one depicted, as do many of the old COG routes.
Was out with JJL yesterday to get the NS's Central of Georgia unit on the of #275. Took a hit at Orange meeting The Crescent and we got CF'd at Arrowhead but the clouds cleared the further South we went.

This train presented somewhat of a dilemma. After exiting the drive-through at the hometown McDonalds, some 46 miles away from the location in this photo, I heard the dispatcher preparing a meet for 8101 and NS train 239 at Shattuc, just west of Centralia. With extensive cloud cover over the area but a break to the east, and an intent to also shoot some special power on NS train 31N coming to St. Louis from Decatur, I decided last minute to take a chance. I jumped on the interstate and headed east.
I was still about 15 miles out when 167 met 239 at Shattuc, then proceeded to get a couple track warrants east from the NS Southern-West dispatcher, then permission from BNSF and CN to cut through Centralia.
I rolled into town just in time to pass under the rear of the train on route 161, worked my way through a dozen lights and stop signs, and was able to nab this grab shot of the head end as it crossed over divided Highway 51 running north-south through Centralia.
I got a little side trekked today when I stumbled upon my friend Casey on NS #8101. Lucky for me I had my camera with me so I was able to snap off a shot as they headed back to Chamblee with local job P51 passing through Birmont Junction.

The Central of Georgia Heritage Unit was supposed to lead NS 21D out of Charleston that day. But in a typical twist of fate, there was some mechanical issue and so the Unit was set aside at Remount Road while another usual power took its place. The stars aligned for the Central of Georgia heritage unit to lead NS train #321 (Atlanta, GA - Jacksonville, FL) down 'home' rails from Atlanta to Macon Saturday morning. The real surprise was the double heritage lashup, #8101 & #1070! With upgraded continuous welded rail and faster speed limits its makes one scratch their head why NS doesnt utilize this route more.
Here's #321 passing an old Cotton Mill turned furniture store at Forsyth, GA.

Westbound intermodal NS 201 rumbles through Wabun, Va on the eastern end of the Christiansburg district. I was quite lucky on this morning since 201 is usually through the area overnight anymore.
