Die Steinbrücken der Vergangenheit waren häufig von verheerenden Hochwassern bedroht - und wurden mehr als einmal völlig zerstört.
Um die Brückenpfeiler zu verstärken und zu schützen,
wurden ihnen massive, spitz zulaufende steinerne Inseln vorgesetzt, die "Beschlächte", wie man in Regensburg sagt.
