Flaming Mountains, Turpan, China.
The Flaming Mountains are hot. In the summer, the ground surface temperature can reach 80 degrees Celsius or 175 degrees Farhenheit. In the summer, the waves of desert heat and mirages dance on the red ridge that is furrowed by parallel gullies. So it does look like a wall of flames especially in the afternoons in a red sky.
There is a Flaming Mountain museum with a big thermometer, and a lot of Chinese tour groups go there. There are camel rides and kids excited about the Journey to the West and the characters like the Monkey King.

Just another day at the office. Actually, I wasn't working on this day, but my coworker let me know the night before that we had some new arrivals. So I went this morning, rain or shine -- rain, actually. All the pelicans were cruising with their wings more raised than I have ever seen. The rain had stopped here, so my guess is they were drying out, like me too. The "arrivals" (merganser, wigeons, shovelers) weren't to be found, btw.

Technically this photo is awful. However it does show something interesting - an East Kent Daimler Fleetline (believed to be RFN 962G) on hire to Maidstone & District. The bus is seen at Tonbridge Station working a service 215 journey to Higham Wood in December 1978.
Note the 'on hire' sticker with M&D scroll logo in the lower destination display aperture.
