Situada na zona poente da cidade de Ponta Delgada, a Gruta do Carvão constitui o maior túnel lávico da Ilha de São Miguel, com uma extensão actual de cerca de 1.650m, repartida por três troços principais: Rua de Lisboa (ou Secadores de Tabaco), Rua do Paim e Rua João do Rego. Contudo documentos antigos e observações de campo indiciam uma dimensão muito superior à actualmente cartografada para esta cavidade, podendo ter atingido mais de 5 km de comprimento.

Sobre esta gruta, Gaspar Frutuoso, no séc. XVI, escreveu, no seu livro IV das Saudades da Terra: “Além, pouco espaço da Fortaleza, para oeste, está uma ponta que se chama a Ponta dos Algares, porque saem ali dois com suas bocas, por dentro dos quais se caminha grande caminho por baixo da terra, por cujo vão parece que correu ribeira de pedra de biscouto em outro tempo, não sabido nem visto”.

Dadas as potencialidades da Gruta do Carvão em termos científicos, didácticos e turísticos e, ainda, a sua importância enquanto património natural, esta cavidade vulcânica foi classificada como Monumento Natural Regional através do Decreto Legislativo Regional n.º 4/2005/A, de 11 de Maio.

  

À medida que se percorre esta cavidade vulcânica é possível observar inúmeras estruturas espeleológicas, como balcões, pontes lávicas, ramificações laterais, bolas de lava, estalactites lávicas e secundárias, lavas esponjosas e esmaltadas e moldes lávicos de árvores.

As paredes e tecto, para além de diversas fendas relacionadas com o arrefecimento da lava aquando da formação da cavidade vulcânica, evidenciam várias colorações, incluindo tonalidades alaranjadas a amareladas resultantes da alteração (oxidação) do basalto. Há, ainda, inúmeros conjuntos de estalactites lávicas, predominantemente esmaltadas e de forma cónica, que conferem à gruta uma beleza peculiar. Diversos depósitos minerais secundários (nomeadamente de sílica) e materiais terrosos revestem, nalguns locais, as paredes e tecto da gruta.

De entre as características desta gruta lávica, merecem especial destaque a sua dimensão, as inúmeras estalagmites lávicas (por vezes com mais de 25cm de comprimento), os diversos tipos e dimensões de estalactites lávicas presentes (soda straw, cónicas, anelares, etc.) e o facto de uma parte significativa da gruta se desenvolver sob a forma de dois túneis sobrepostos, por vezes com poços comunicantes entre si.
