London Transport was responsible for operating 65 coaches on behalf of British European Airways, transporting passengers from Central London to London Heathrow Airport. They were AEC Regal IV with a chassis very similar to the RFW class, and a Park Royal body built to an LTE design.. This example was in the first batch of vehicles new in 1952. One temptation of going to the mall to meet strangers is that there are lots of people there and not all of them are rushed. The other obvious temptation is that the warm temperature is better for subjects (and photographer) in the depths of a Canadian winter. The big disadvantage is the light which is either artificial or is filtered through the atrium, resulting in a rather cold, flat, greenish cast which I find hard to deal with.

That said, I was in the mall this morning and saw the challenge of a spot with sidelighting from above near a railing and I wanted to see if I could overcome it with my reflector. This attractive young woman walked past me and once my brain kicked into gear, I realized I had let a great potential subject slip past. I caught up with her, introduced myself and explained the project. Meet Emily who was instantly willing to participate.

I showed her the spot and the concept and she held the reflector while I took some photos but I could see the light was harsh and not flattering. I tried facing her in the other direction and got a mirror image of the same problem (no surprise, really, but I just had to try.) Finally, feeling that I might be failing in my mission, I tried a backlit photo of her at the railing, with her holding the reflector to bounce some of the atrium light up onto her attractive face. This is that image.

Emily turned out to be one of those subjects who was very interesting and fun to talk to. She is 25 and works in a nearby bank as a teller. That has been her student job for 3 years while she is pursuing her degree in Retail Management at the nearby university. She told me that today was significant; it was her final day to be working at the bank. She handed in her resignation recently and is going to be moving on. She said working at the bank has been great experience for her and she likes working with the public, but the bank is just too structured and formal for a more artistic and creative sort like her. She’s delighted to be moving on and was in a celebratory mood.

Emily is from a town not far from Toronto but came to Toronto for university. She has created a product line of marbleized skins for cell phones, laptops, and iPads. and her company is really taking off. She is quite optimistic that with her creative products and her education in the field of marketing, she’s got a success on her hands - even before graduation. Clever woman. Looking forward to graduation, Emily would like to travel before settling down and she pointed out that she could take care of company business from anywhere, thanks to the internet. When I asked Emily how her friends would describe her she said “I hope they would say ‘friendly, outgoing, easy-going, and kind.’” Those seem very descriptive of Emily as I experienced her at the mall today. She told me that she sees her mission as being to brighten the day for everyone she comes into contact with. She succeeded in her mission with me today!
