STS108-721-081 (5-17 December 2001) --- The Atlantic coast of Western Sahara in Africa was photographed by one of the STS-108 crewmembers using a handheld 70mm camera. Red lines in the photo are sand dunes aligned parallel to the dominant offshore northeasterly winds. Large gray-brown areas (left) represent vast coastal salt flats known locally as sebkhas. Salt efflorescence shows up as the small lighter gray patches. Offshore currents are discernable because of sun glint, with internal waves (the straighter lines) and eddies (spiral features) visible.
