The Norns – Strathpeffer Spa Gardens

This remarkable four-metre-tall wooden sculpture was created by local woodcarver Allister Brebner from the trunk of a giant Douglas fir felled on the Novar Estate near Evanton. Weighing around four tonnes, it is one of five carvings depicting figures from Celtic, Norse and Pictish legend that were installed in Strathpeffer’s Spa Gardens in 2007.

In Norse mythology, the Norns—Urðr, Verðandi and Skuld—were powerful female beings who shaped the destinies of gods and mortals. Often associated with the past, present and future, they were said to dwell beside Yggdrasil, the great world tree, where they determined the course and length of each life.

The three figures have been carved together within a single tree trunk, making the living material of the sculpture especially appropriate for these legendary guardians of fate.
