In 1996 I accepted an assignment from Explore magazine, then based in Calgary: to travel to Atlin, in northern British Columbia, take an art course, and write a story about my experience. The Atlin Art Centre was founded and run by Gernot Dick, artist and educator, as a way of merging two of his great passions. An art school in the wilderness? Why not?
It was rustic but comfortable, in a magnificent setting on a small plateau above Atlin Lake, ringed by mountains. The idea was to experience wilderness and then create from it. We paddled canoes, climbed an extinct volcano, hiked the forest, and walked on a glacier. Among the 17 participants were painters, sculptors, glass artists, a furniture maker, and even another photographer besides myself. Despite some glitches - when are there not glitches? - I spent an amazing month there and came away with my story.
I was surprised when this image made the leading two-page spread. I had expected the designer to go with one of the outdoor adventure shots, or perhaps a shot of some of the artists at work in the studio. But it worked for me.

Kris Deelane and the Hurt Performing at Pine Fest Music Festival in Halfway Oregon
A spectacular Saturday on the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway for day Pine Fest - Halfway, Oregon with a great headlining performance by Kris Deelane and the Hurt.
Billed as the tiniest music festival in the tiniest town, Pine fest is one of our favorite fall events along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. We had a great day hanging out with locals and visitors from Oregon Idaho and Washington listening to a great line up of bands and musicians from throughout the Northwest at the Baker County Fairgrounds in Halfway.
Pine Fest is the largest musical festival in Halfway but the community also hosts a number of other musical events including the summer concert series on the Main Street Stage. For more information about Pine Fest including next year’s dates and performers visit www.pinefest.org
The town of Halfway is just one of numerous small towns along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, a loop that encircles the Wallowa Mountains, intersecting with Interstate 84 at Baker City and La Grande, and communities all along the byway host a variety of festivals and community events throughout the year providing visitors a chance to celebrate local culture and visit with locals while exploring this incredibly scenic region of North East Oregon.
The byway is a popular destination for group tours and offers visitors a chance to experience small town Americana in small towns like Halfway, as they explore the rugged and spectacular Northeast Oregon landscape along the way.
The entire route is on a paved highway. Plan ahead - you'll find stretches of more than eighty miles without gas and with few services. A segment of the Byway between Joseph and Halfway closes with snow in winter, but allows access to winter recreation areas, offering a whole other kind of Northeast Oregon Adventure.

Winnetoon is a small community of under 100 residents located in southern Knox County to the northwest of Creighton.
阿里山國家風景區，阿里山國家森林遊樂區橫跨番路、竹崎、梅山、阿里山等四鄉鎮；阿里山向來以五奇著稱：日出、雲海、晚霞、森林與高山鐵路等自然美景遠近馳名。還有峽谷飛瀑、轄區內獨特的「Z」字型森林鐵道（俗稱火車碰壁）旁各式櫻花相伴的繁花熱鬧及竹林景觀更令人流連忘返，著名的阿里山日出，隨著四季變化，其觀賞的位置與時間均有所不同。名列臺灣八景之一的阿里山雲海，常出現於日出或薄暮，天氣晴朗而有浮雲時，秋天乃是觀賞雲海最好的季節。尤其是日出，讓多少攝影師情願犧牲睡眠，摸黑上祝山山頂耐心等待，其魅力可見一斑，蒸汽火車的復駛更成為攝影師必拍景點。
而在阿里山看日出，還可遠眺鄒族聖山，塔山。從祝山往玉山山脈的方向看去，左側有一處氣勢恢弘壯闊的斷崖，塔山斷崖，塔山就是阿里山鄒族族人的聖山。
阿里山櫻花季跟陽明山合稱為台灣兩大花祭，每年3月中旬至4月中旬名聞遐邇的「阿里山花季」登場，有不同種類的櫻花陸續接力綻放，美不勝收。
首先是由山櫻花(台灣緋寒櫻)、琉球山櫻花、霧社櫻及千島櫻最早開放拉開序幕，接著是阿里山櫻花季數量最為龐大最主要的主角，粉白色的染井吉野櫻大放異彩，此時也是阿里山櫻花季的最高峰，重瓣的八重櫻接續登場，有枝垂櫻、高砂櫻、普賢象櫻、關山櫻、紅華、麒麟櫻、五所櫻、一葉櫻、鬱金、萬里香等爭奇鬥艷，從年初到三月間逐一綻放，吉野櫻花季一落幕，大島櫻、普賢象櫻等緊接著陸續接棒綻放，美得難以形容！
阿里山有許多必玩景點：新八景之塔山奇岩、小笠原山、水山巨木、香林拱橋、28號巨木、慈雲觀景、神怡流瀑、阿里山神木遺跡。阿里山火車站、祝山、沼平(車站及公園周邊)、從沼平車站一路沿著步道向下走就是傳說故事中姊妹為愛殉情化做無數台灣紅檜的姊妹潭(姊妹池)、受鎮宮、巨木群棧道、樹靈塔、慈雲寺、阿里山神木、三代木及象鼻木、二萬平、二萬坪風景區、,二萬坪森林鐵道、森林步道等，二萬坪還有兩塊因公殉職紀念碑，一塊是為死於1912年1月8日的技師二宮英雄而立；一塊是紀念近藤熊之助殉於1914年2月20日的「從七位近藤熊之助君殉職碑」，值得深度遊覽。
