The real reason I went after the train to Driftwood was the hopes of chasing a Big leading on the Northbound run. They took a long time getting to Driftwood because of MOW needing to clear up a few times. By the time they got going North it was late and most of the run was in the shadows. It had been a dome sky day, until they were ready to head North and the high clouds moved in to mute the sun, but you take what you can get. Never thought the Bigs would still be going in October..

Wenige Minuten bevor am späten Sonntagabend die Sonne endgültig verschwand, kündigte ein Rauschen einen weiteren Güterzug an und wenig später legte sich 140 637 samt kalt mitlaufender Schwesterlok 140 821 mit ihrem Neuwagenzug bei Haste in die Kurve.
Peu avant le coucher du soleil, la 140 637 passe Haste avec en véhicule la 140 821 et un train complet de voitures destinés à l'export. La reprise de locs de la série 143 de DB Regio par DB Cargo menace désormais fortement la série 140 qui devrait s'éteindre avant la fin de l'année.

WNYP 637 & 630 work the sand facility in Emporium, PA on May 25, 2019. This was before the crowds showed up to capture the last runs of the WNYP Big's. IIRC there were only 3 of us out on this day.

Sometimes you just get lucky...
I set out this morning on a whim... work has been a bit busy, and I just haven't taken a day to go watch trains in a long time.
After working 19 hours the day before, I got a five hour nap and started towards Mahnomen and worked my way to Thief River Falls. I got two trains on the CP and one on the BNSF. I headed over towards the Noyes Sub when I heard the BNSF 637 and 667 were on the NOYGFD.
I got over to Noyes to find my friend Elliot at the throttle and switching in Warren. I almost didn't wait for them to finish their work as I had to be back in Bemidji by 4:30. The more I waited, the closer I was cutting it.
Finally about an hour later, they train came thundering through Warren. I chased the train along highway 75. It had been solid overcast the entire day. I hadn't seen a single glimpse of the sun.
I snapped a few pics of the train and wanted one last shot of the train going by the elevators in Angus. Just as the train was signaling the crossing, the cloud opened up and painted the scene with sunlight. I had to make some quick exposure adjustments.
These old Santa Fe units have been working on different trains out of Grand Forks for quite a while, but I don't think they've been together before. Things just fell together for this shot. I saw a total of 40 seconds of sunshine all day... and it couldn't have been any more perfectly timed.
A trio of Bigs leads 21 cars of stone North at Emporium, PA on the evening of August 17, 2019. The railfan army was in pursuit but many of them quit after Keating Summit, as it was after sunset when the train finally got to Turtlepoint.
WNYP Bigs 637 - 630 - 685 have just crested the grade at Keating Summit, PA with 22 stone loads on June 30, 2019. It's all down hill from here!

A trio of matched orange and black Bigs move sand loads out of Emporium, PA on June 12, 2019. The WNYP ran light engines to Emporium on this day. They grabbed all the sand loads on the South side of town as well as some of the loads in the yard and hauled them up to the new unloading tracks in Turtlepoint.
