De U-Bahn van Berlijn is het ondergrondse metrosysteem van de Duitse hoofdstad en vormt samen met de S-Bahn hier de ruggengraat van het openbaar vervoer.
Het Berlijnse metronetwerk bestaat uit twee volledig van elkaar gescheiden deelnetwerken. Op het ene netwerk rijden treinen met zogenaamd ‘Kleinprofil’ (kleinprofiel). Op het andere netwerk rijdt breder materieel dat wordt aangeduid als ‘Großprofil’ (grootprofiel). Het Kleinprofil-net bestaat uit de lijnen U1 tot en met U4 en is het oudste deel van het Berlijnse metronet. Het Kleinprofil-net is zeer de moeite waard. Dat geldt vooral voor het traject die destijds het eerst is aangelegd en – door de ligging op viaducten – als ‘Hochbahn’ is uitgevoerd.
Op het Kleinprofil-net zijn vier materieeltypen actief: de Baureihen A3, G, HK en IK. Het oudste materieel stamt uit het einde van de jaren ’80 (Baureihe G) en het begin van de jaren ’90 (Baureihe A3). Ondanks de leeftijd van 30 jaar, oogt het huidige materieel van de Baureihe A3 nog een stuk ouder. Het ontwerp van de eerste serie van de Baureihe A3 - dit materieel is allang van de rails verdwenen - dateert uit de jaren ‘50 en is sinds die tijd slechts in beperkte mate veranderd.
Het oude materieel wordt met veel moeite aan de praat gehouden, omdat de levering van nieuwe Stadler-treinstellen vertraging oploopt door softwareproblemen. Dientengevolge kent het Kleinprofil-net op dit moment veel rituitval.

I mischieviously took a 'sickie' off work on a good forecast and spent two days in the Horseshoe Curve to get a few shots of the 'missing location'. I had long been fascinated by the West Highland Railway since I first saw Bill Andersons' pictures, especially the June 1960 SLS tour with K4 61995 'Cameron of Locheil' in the Horseshoe Curve, the fireman leaning out the window as were the passengers, enjoying the moment.
A poor time of year, light-wise and on foot, to grab a similar, but far less atmospheric scene, saw 37405 "Strathclyde Region" in the curve on the 1415 Fort William-Glasgow, one of the only two day-time services that were locomotive-hauled and would soon end, and a cheery wave from the second man as was usual. 14th June 1988.

LNER Gresley K4 2-6-0 61995 ''Cameron of Lochiel'' waiting at Rannoch station in June 1960, with the Stephenson Locomotive Society 'White Cockade' railtour.
The special was not scheduled to stop here, but was running late, and had to wait for a BR service train in the opposite direction to pass.
This particular loco had odd steam pipes, with one side having a distinct kink, as seen here. It was withdrawn in October 1961, and scrapped in 1962.
One of the class - of six - had been rebuilt by Thompson into his prototype K1, and one - 61994 ''The Great Marquess'' - was later purchased directly from BR, and preserved.

This guy has been far, FAR too long coming, largely due to me changing jobs multiple times, university work, and not having access to my lego parts for most of the last year or so.
Yayap was an existing character in the Cyclic Plane Storyline, and was actually a player character of my friend Gideon's back in the day.

Gresley K4 61995 Cameron of Locheil is stored at Thornton Junction shed on 3 June 1961. It had been allocated there in December 1959 from Eastfield. It was withdrawn in October 1961. The buildings in the background are part of Rothes colliery which was built in 1957 but closed in 1962 because of flooding and structural problems.
