Originally a Roman temple, the structure at Cordoba was replaced by a Christian Visigoth church. This church was split into two parts — one remained a church and the other was converted into a mosque —when Andalusia was taken over by the Moors. Sprawling over an area of 24,000 square meters, it is one of Spain’s most famous landmarks and is visited by over a million people annually.
