After 10 months uploading photos in my web (Dec-2015, knowing nothing about photography, I still don't 😬), I never thought to reach the contact of 5000 fabulous colleagues with my passion, I really appreciate all the comments and "stars" all this time 😘. It's definitely a cool experience fishing off the end of Long Island and viewing the Montauk Lighthouse in the distance
Nankartshang Peak was our first 5k peak ever and let me tell you: the altitude does impact your body! Literally 5m (!) away from the top I had to stop for a minute to recover! And it was one of many breaks on this 600m ascent. I thought that if you walk slowly, you can always keep going, but this trek proved I was wrong...

This rather attractive cloud was the herald of a very unattractive change in the weather.
It's also photo number 5000 on my 'stream!
The Long Now Foundation longnow.org/about/ founded in 1996 by, among others, Stewart Brand (Whole Earth Catalog) and Jeff Bezos (Amazon) is worried about your “pathologically short attention span”. To address this deficit, they propose the building of two 10,000 year clocks longnow.org/clock/ . One in Texas (Bezos), and one in the Snake Range of Nevada (Owner apparently yet to be determined). The fact that a 10,000 year clock in the form of living and relict populations of Great Basin Bristlecone Pine already existed on the Snake Range property was either pure serendipity, or irony on a cosmic scale.
At any rate, the Foundation has decided to make the most of the opportunity by wiring the ancient tree depicted above to a “monumental mechanical calendar situated in downtown Reno at the Nevada Museum of Art.” blog.longnow.org/02016/01/21/centuries-of-the-bristlecone/ This calendar “will provide a precise digital indication of seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years according to the growth of the tree...” This precision will be “...based on the tree’s daily increase in girth...” and will be “...accessible online and via an app for smartphone and smartwatch.” I am confused about this because bristlecones only grow for six weeks out of the year.
Certainly, at 73, I admit to being technology (and apparently visionary) challenged and have for decades been out of step with the times, but all this seems to be lacking in some fundamental human precept. Besides, it is just an updated version of the slab of Prometheus that hung for decades in an Ely, Nevada saloon and casino like a freak in a circus. Anyway, here is what I posted on their website:
Since I am unable to post it here, I have posted on my Flickr site a recent photo of what might be called the “Tree of the Long Now”. Standing on Long Now property on Mt Washington, Nevada, it is a Great Basin Bristlecone Pine that, from its long-axis diameter of approximately eight feet, could conservatively be inferred to be 4800 years old -- older than the earliest known recordings of creation myths. From such a perspective, we of the Anthropocene are the long now and this elegant and enduring living tree, now swathed in straps and sensors like an arboreal E.T., is what that long now looks like.
This tree is a living multi-millennial connection with the past that should say more to us about our own existence than any whizz-bang clock-down-a-rabbit-hole will ever say to anyone. It is difficult to understand how transmitting the six-week annual growth-rate of such a tree to an art gallery in Reno -- a growth-rate that at a 1:1 ratio will move a graph needle a little more than one-half of an inch over the course of an entire human lifetime -- can be seen as anything more than a smug technological stunt or, at best, an entertaining factoid instantly accessible and instantly irrelevant. It is most certainly insensitive and willfully disrespectful.

My husdand, twin sister, and I ran a local 5k Friday night, so I had to utilize the opportunity for a bench Monday shot. This is my identical twin, but I had her wear my tennis shoes for the picture, so it is kind of me, right?!!:) I absolutely love running...and 5ks are so much fun!!!:) Happy Bench Labor Day everyone!!!:)
