Protest at New Scotland Yard after PC Simon Harwood found Not Guilty of manslaughter of Ian Tomlinson at 2009 G20 protest - London

Protesters gathered outside New Scotland Yard on 19th July 2012 to voice their dismay at the 'Not Guilty' verdict handed down to disgraced ex-police officer Simon Harwood who had been on trial charged with the manslaughter of newspaper-seller Ian Tomlinson during the 2009 G20 protest. The coroner's inquest had returned a verdict of "Unlawful killing" on Tomlinson's death.

The Crown Court trial jury had not been allowed to know that Harwood's 12 year police career was littered with accusations of violence, witness intimidation, a threat to kill, illegally accessing the Police National Computer and perverting the course of justice. It has since been learned also that Harwood had behaved with extreme violence against members of the public.

Ian Tomlinson's name joins a very long list of names of those who have died after contact with the police, including Mark Duggan, Smiley Culture, Joy Gardner, Cynthia Jarrett, Roger Sylvester, Christopher Alder for which not a single police officer has ever been successfully prosecuted.

The peaceful protesters were met outside New Scotland Yard by a line of police officers who seemed to be more interested in protecting the iconic revolving sign which had recently been relocated to make it more accessible for camera crews.

I've had the pleasure of participating in the Taiwan Pride this past Saturday. Although there are groups from all over the country, the primary location for the parade has always been the city of Taipei, and lucky for me, that's exactly where I am. I was told that the parade had attracted more than 30,000 participants and is considered one of the largest gay pride events in Asia.
