Sur le même perchoir que le martin-pêcheur deux photos plus loin

Spotted this guy while I was watering the flower bed - it's right in the middle of an oversized Pride of Madeira and I just couldn't get more than this rather cluttered view. But ... it was huge as grasshoppers go, and it was colored like nothing I'd ever seen. So, likely fresh out of its previous skin, you can see the wings aren't fully formed yet.

Painted lady

Scientific name

Vanessa cardui

A fairly large orange, black and white butterfly, the painted lady is a migrant to the UK from North Africa, the Middle East and southern Europe during the summer; sometimes it arrives here in enormous numbers. A frequent visitor to gardens, it will feed on Buddleia and other flowers. The caterpillars feed on thistles, mallows and Viper's-bugloss, as well as various cultivated plants. This species cannot survive our winter in any form.

Widgeon

A common dabbling duck, the wigeon is a winter visitor that gathers in large numbers, particularly on wet grasslands, floodplain meadows, flooded gravel pits and reservoirs with gently sloping edges where they can easily get out onto the grassy banks. Wigeon can be spotted dabbling in close-knit groups or flying in tight formations over wetlands.
