CP/D&H Train 557 gets out of Binghamton, New York on a nice late December day. Binghamton had an unbroken string of Alco-design diesels leading road trains, starting with the Erie/DL&W/EL and the D&H, later continued by the NYS&W, and ending when the CP finally ended the string in the mid-1990’s. It’s no wonder that the Southern Tier town was the destination for so many railfan weekends.

Here's a Christmas 'Steam Sunday' bonus following up on the prior post showing Old 557 on her first day back moving on her old home rails, albeit atop a flat car. In this photo she can be seen enroute from Whittier to Anchorage behind twin GP40-2s crossing the Placer River and about to duck into the mile long Portage Tunnel at Bear Valley at about MP 5.7 on the Alaska Railroad’s Whittier Division mainline.
The Alaska Railroad's last active steam locomotive, #557, returned after a 46 1/2 year hiatus in the lower 48. #557 is a Baldwin Locomotive Works class S-160 2-8-0 Consolidation built for the US Army Transportation Corps. and diverted to Alaska in December 1944. Retired and shipped out of state in 1965, she was purchased by a wealthy Alaskan philanthropic family, repatriated to the Last Frontier, and donated back to the ARR with the provision she must be returned to active service within 8 years.
