Taken on my only visit to the New Brighton branch on the Wirral. Class 508 emus await their next workings. 508115 is on the left - I had just arrived from Hamilton Square on this unit. On the right are 508106/508116 which would shortly take me to West Kirby.
The station was opened by the Wirral Railway in 1888, and all services are now operated by Merseyrail. All trains operated by Merseyrail are still formed of Class 507/508 emus, the same units that were in use on 1985. Class 777 units, provided by Stadler Rail, are due to be introduced on the system in 2019.

Unit History
Forty Three class 508 four car units were built at York works in 1979/80 and were initially used on the Southern Region as seen here. The class is to the standard inner suburban electric multiple unit design of the period and are similar to the class 313, 314, 315 and 507 units also built to the same basic design. After four years service on the Southern Region the units were reduced to three car sets and transferred to Birkenhead for Merseyrail duties. The displaced vehicle was incorporated in a batch of class 455 units then being built. 508015 is still in service on the Merseyrail system renumbered 508115, and the displaced vehicle S71540 is now formed in class 455 unit 5703.
