From a time when I had lost most of my interest in railways and using print films. With no details all I can say is a NSE 50 at Radley probably 1990ish.

The consensus is that the loco is 50034, the newish RH buffer and lack of orange squares on the cab end bottom. Thanks to rhifddeugain and Steadfast Fotography

50007 (numbered 50034 and named Furious on this side) completes the last few hundred yards of the journey of 5Q14 15:01 Worksop-Derby Litchurch Lane unit move, on 21/07/21. Apart from taking the barriers back to Leicester, this was the last of 3 days for 50007/50049 working on GBRF unit transfers, which coincided (mostly) with some great weather.

Class 50 line up. A trio of class 50s all in stunning large logo BR blue livery seen here at TGG (the Greatest Gathering) Derby Litchurch Lane.

50007 (masquerading as 50034 'Furious') rolls into Westbury with the VSOE stock forming UK Railtours 'The Devon Pullman', a 1Z50 08.00 Victoria-Exeter St Davids on an extremely dull 18/06/22 following the hottest day of the year so far the day before !

GBRf-liveried Class 50s 50007 "Hercules" (painted up as 50034 "Furious" on one side) and 50049 "Defiance" lead the return Worcester to London Victoria Belmond British Pullman dining excursion past Croome Perry/Besford, Worcestershire.

50007 "Hercules", showing off its facade of lost-lost classmate 50034 "Furious", is seen roaring through the quaint halt of Newton St Cyres on the Barnstaple branch with the 1Z52 14.12 Paignton-Okehampton "Springtime Hoovering in Devon" excursion, the first Hoovers to visit Okehampton in several years. 50049 "Defiance" was bringing up the rear (hidden by a tree) and was declared a failure upon returning to Exeter, leaving 50007 to do all the work on the return to London.

Knowing that 50007s arrival at Exeter would be covered from every angle I set myself a challenge of trying to get a fresh angle. I had two spots in mind , one I used extensively during my video days and one I had used a couple of times with my Nikon FM2 when access wasn't a problem.

The first spot was too much of a challenge even for Viola May 2 but the 2nd spot seemed to be on.

On 01/04/22 5Q76 0848 Derby LL-Wembley Yd conveyed unit 720105 top and tailed by 50034 (50007) & 56081. After passing me here the fun & games started, with the unit being rejected by Anglia so a plan was made to return the train back to Litchurch Lane. The train was diverted to reverse on the Up & Down slow line at Syston station, but whilst the driver was changing ends - Anglia accepted the unit ! So off it went via Syston south curve back on booked route via Corby, unfortunately for those waiting to photograph it, reversing the train so the 56 was now leading, though cloud had by that time started to cause issues for some..

The 50 is on hire to GBRF due to a shortage of their rail services 47s at the moment with both 47727 & 47749 out of traffic.

50007 'Hercules' (running as 50034 'Furious') and 50049 'Defiance' roar through Garforth with "The Christmas White Rose Express" from Cardiff to Newcastle on 4th December 2021. The pair had been diverted from their booked route from Doncaster to York (Direct) and were instead routed via Wakefield Westgate and Leeds. They could be heard all the way from Marsh Lane Cutting to Garforth!

GBRf's immaculately turned out 50007 'Hercules' masquerading, on this side at least, as 50034 'Furious' leaves Syston in a haze of exhaust provided by 56081 at the front working 5Q76, the 08.48 unit drag from Derby Litchurch Lane to Wembley Intercity Depot.

My third and final shot I got of this tour with luck from the sun appearing in a perfect pocket of light once again as the train passed. From what seemed at one point to be a pretty dull day for me after my first attempt losing the sun my seconds, going out again in the evening certainly made up for that and I’m happy with how my three shots from this day turned out.

Taken from the new footbridge at Old Denaby 50007 (wearing the number of 50034) and 50049 are seen heading towards Doncaster. The 1Z49 Cardiff to Newcastle service was running 46 minutes late by this point and would reach Newcastle 108 minutes late. I could only see an exhaust from 50049 so I don't know whether there was an issue with 007.

Memories of the fine art of Vac bashing

Between 1983 and 1991 I spent many, many happy hours with my friends riding the rails behind the mighty 'Hoovers' or Class 50s. As well as enjoying the thrash, I managed to record many of the trips and railway scenes encountered on film for posterity. Those days are now long gone, but happily the photos remain for me to reminisce over and share ;)

Here is one of a set of photos I took on one of my last visits to Old Oak Common in 1990 - with Class 50 50032 'Courageous' in reflective mood after a 22 career on British Rail. One of the ex-ScotRail 'Duffs' that replaced the 'Vacs' on the Oxfords can be seen lurking in the background.

50032 always stood out from the crowd in NSE livery because of the unique blue nameplate. The loco was a particular favourite of mine, and I was disappointed that she escaped preservation.

Locomotive History

D432 entered service 13-Jul-68

Renumbered 50032 in 1974

Named 'Courageous' 17-Jul-78

Withdrawn 15-Oct-90

After surviving in service until October 1990, the locomotive was stripped of useful parts at Old Oak Common and then cut up on site by Coopers Metals, along with my least favourite machine 50034 'Furious'. 50032 never carried the later version of NSE livery.

Commuters stream towards the car park at Didcot as 50 034 Furious prepares to depart with 1C67, the 1825 Paddington - Bristol Temple Meads. Pretty sure this was an HST substitution (it looks like an all 1st class set), but the Inter City sector had ceased most use of Class 50s nearly 2 years previously. Also 50 023 Howe had worked the same service the previous night which was reported as vice an HST
