An American Avocet trolling Pond 5 for aquatic invertebrates

Although our holiday home is only about four miles from Polperro, we rarely go there. It's a beautiful tradititional fishing village on the south coast of Cornwall, but it does attract vast crowds of people. The worst thing is that the car park is about three-quarters of a mile away from the harbour, up the hill. And it costs £5 for three hours. So when I do go I tend to take a fair few photos. Apologies for that. This is one of the traditional views of the harbour, but I simply can't resist it.

A Crimson-breasted shrike makes off with a crust while my guide caught the action with my Panasonic camera. Sharing the challenges and joy of photographing birds helped ease the tension between us in our short break under the trees.

For those who are interested, an extract from this day's Journal.

"Ruby set up a table and two chairs under a tree with low hanging branches. She brought out a thermos of hot water, tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits (cookies for my north American friends), and our minds turned to refreshments. There were birds in the upper branches, but very soon their minds turned to refreshments as well. In next to no time small and hungry birds were all around us. I had the feeling this wasn't the first time people had stopped here for some light refreshments.

Pied Crows, Southern Pale Chanting, a Goss Hawk and Cape Sparrows were joined by Crimson-breasted shrikes, Familiar chats, Ruppels Korhaans and Tit-babblers. This was a bird watcher's picnic, even if it was impossible to get shots of all the birds. The birds attracted other tour vehicles and very soon we were overrun by camera toting tourists from far and wide. The tourists came and the birds departed, it was as simple as that. We drank our now cold drinks and pushed on.

From here we retraced our drive through the sand to Deadvlei where we picked up the bitumen road back to our private entrance to Kulala Game Reserve. We drove in silence and along the way I fell asleep, Ruby was not best pleased, but I'd been awake since 3AM and my body clock was struggling to adjust to to time difference.

Ruby said I should have a siesta after lunch; she would see me a 5 for our afternoon drive."

We use a ratio of 1/1/5 for lime juice/sugar/water. Add a little lime zest and mint and you've got yourself a very refreshing drink.

Sunsets are a remarkable feature of our Creator's artistry. Ever changing and ever beautiful, each moment is a unique canvas. And these moments are on constant display around the globe as the sphere of the Earth spins on it's axis in perpetual motion.

It is good to take the following advice, "Look up to heaven and see, Observe the clouds, which are high above you" (Job 35:5) for otherwise we would miss some of the beauty that has been installed for our pleasure and appreciation.

I could have easily missed this moment yesterday evening. I was taking a few "ordinary" shots of the sunset when the cloud pattern lit up with this display. Within a few minutes it had disappeared again and the sky was back to its relatively drab tones in the failing dusk. Most other people were going about their business and were oblivious to the show that we had just enjoyed.

Interestingly I arrived here to get some night shots of Fawley (oil refinery) across the water. I have seen Fawley at night from the New Forest and it can be quite a spectacle but the view from Cowes was disappointing. I had my D750 setup on a tripod ready to go but my ageing brain was not flexible enough to readjust the setup for this shot. Thankfully I had my D810 along side and took some hurried snaps with it. You can see my tripod in the bottom left of the image and Alison in her pink anorak just beyond. She was reading a book in the car and would have missed the sunset if I had not informed her.

“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.” (Peter 2:21-25)

This one had some better timed light painting ... while my daughter and I were there in the dark this was using an LED light off to the right.

The issue was she was shooting the 60D with the Canon 10/22 lens at f3.5 for 30 seconds ... and I was shooting the Sigma 14mm at f1.8 for 15 seconds. The light painting was too strong for my exposure but about right for hers, or vice versa if good for my exposure and not enough for hers.

We quickly adapted with the light painting where we would start our exposures at the same time, I would turn the LED light on for about 1 to 3 seconds for my exposure, and then turn it off ... wait until my 15 second shot ended, and then lit up the elements again while her exposure continued on for the 30 seconds. That usually resulted in the same amount of light painting desired for each of our exposures.

We got this down pretty good as the night continued to darken.

White balance here is cloudy as shot with the RAW file, giving the warmer hues in the early night.

Folded by me

Paper : 1m ??cm

My first thought was , 'There's ver.3.5 for both of Phoenix and Ryuzin by him, but why not Bahamut?'

So I started designing the version 3.5 of the model Bahamut(took me weeks..little by little..)

I used really thin Kraft paper and the size was.. well, I'm definitely sure it was longer than 1m.

Why so long? I first intended to fold the version in Final Fantasy 10, but the thing is that the paper was too thin to maintain the round shape on the back. So even though I got the flaps to fold the round one on its back, after folding it I just hid the flaps.

I used inner-grafting to make the legs and arms more longer and the resulting layers were used to fold scales on its tale and abdomen. The resulting layers from the flaps of the round part(that was eventually hidden) were pulled out to make the wing.

Anyways, hope you guys like it! :D

Sunspot Group 4341 is a Beta-Delta-Gamma magnetic configuration. This is group with bipolar (+/-) spots within the penumbra (lighter shade) but are separated in the umbra (darker shade). This group has a 25% chance for producing an M-Class flare and 5% for an X-Flare and maybe eventually some aurora.

UPDATE:

SIGNIFICANT X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Sunspot 4341 erupted today (Jan. 18 @ 1809 UTC), producing an X1.9-class solar flare. The explosion lasted for hours, which makes this flare even more powerful than than its "X1.9" rating would suggest.

On the 13th October I visited the Arctic Convoy Museum in Aultbea. This story had remained hidden for so long thankfully now you can come and learn about what went on all these years ago.

I paid £5 for entrance and it was a humbling experience to visit this museum a reminder of the service and sacrifice of those who went to war.

The Arctic Convoys took place during the Second World War with supplies of arms, food etc. Loch Ewe was an temporary base at that time with many vessels leaving for Murmansk or Archangel in Northern Russia. Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill called their missions the "worst journey in the world."

Playing with my sons game and the char he created for me to check it out with.

Took a few minutes tonight after shopping, cleaning, and cooking meals for the rest of the week and sat down with a cup of hot coffee before bed and played for a bit on my Son Wayne's game that he started a char for me on, to see how close I could get to what I might play for a char when I get the game for Pc.

Still working 15 & 16 hour days 5 days a week and 8.5 for 1 and 1 day off so not much time to even get into Skyrim and finish my story for Ambrosia. I hope soon to decide what job I want to keep lol. Having two jobs is just about to kill me I think.

Not sure I will play as a member of the Brotherhood of Steel but I do have to say this is one impressive sight as they fly over.

I am sorry am so behind on seeing everyone's work not sure I will ever get caught up. I do hope you are all well, I miss you all :)

4 Pani BP2,5 for 30m MagicSky - Borussenpark Mönchengladbach

I was at the park last Monday to photograph a Jasmine that was leaving the show. She had contacted me and asked me if I would come by and do a set of photos. While there I ran across this Magic Carpet. Earlier I shot a set of photos for her but they were from the other side of the stage. Since I was there I shot a few of her on this side (stage left).

I must admit a certain fondness for photographing the Magic Carpets. They only have their movements and expressions to convey their emotions. Some of them have the most sorrowful expressions.

Photo wise there is some crop (about an eighth off the left and top. This started in LR for the global adjustments then went into Photoshop 5 for some dodging and other clean up.

The galactic centre area of the Milky Way in Sagittarius behind the grand old barn near home in southern Alberta, on June 30, 2019. Illumination of the barn is from twilight to the north, but also from light pollution skyglow from the west off frame at right. The sky is blue from the perpetual summer twilight at this time of year.

Jupiter is at centre. The nebulas and starclouds of the Milky Way show up well here. The southerly Messier clusters, M6 and M7, in Scorpius just skim the horizon at left. The very red star in the “eye” of the Dark Horse is TW Ophiuchi. This is from my latitude of 51° N.

This is a blend of tracked (for the sky) and untracked (for the ground) exposures, with a stack of 3 for the ground and 5 for the sky, stacked to smooth noise. All at ISO 1250 and one minute each, but with the sky exposures at f/2 and ground exposures at f/2.5, with the Sigma 24mm Art lens and stock (not modified) Nikon D750. The sky exposures were through a NiSI Natural Night light pollution filter. The sky exposures are at f/2 to make up for the light loss from shooting thru the filter while keeping exposures short for ease of blending later. The tracker was the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer.

I added a mild Orton effect glow layer to the image using Luminar Flex.

Most likely my favorite picture I've ever taken, at least top 5 for sure. :D

Hope you guys like it as much as I do.

7 days of flowers - Day 5

For Monochrome Bokeh Thursday ;o)

I've challenged myself to find a different flower each day this week, mainly from my 'archives'. I shoot flowers all the time, but not many shots see the light of day! So I'm hoping that you'll enjoy this wander through 7 of them. ;o)

I love to shoot chrysanthemums in all their colours, shapes and sizes. These long-petalled white flowers are not always in the shops, but I snap them up whenever I can! The petals make such wonderful shapes against the light!

Himeji Castle dates to 1333, when Akamatsu Norimura built a fort on top of Himeyama hill. The fort was dismantled and rebuilt as Himeyama Castle in 1346, and then remodeled into Himeji Castle two centuries later.

Himeji Castle was then significantly remodeled in 1581 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who added a three-story castle keep. In 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu awarded the castle to Ikeda Terumasa for his help in the Battle of Sekigahara, and Ikeda completely rebuilt the castle from 1601 to 1609, expanding it into a large castle complex.

Several buildings were later added to the castle complex by Honda Tadamasa from 1617 to 1618.[5] For over 400 years, Himeji Castle has remained intact, even throughout the extensive bombing of Himeji in World War II, and natural disasters such as the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Patrick's_Blue

St. Patrick's Blue is officially the colour which appears on the Irish Presidential Standard (i.e. the flag of the President of Ireland) and the Coat of arms of Ireland. It also appears in the part of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom representing Northern Ireland.

This blue and gold colour scheme is said to represent "the Ancient Colours of Ireland" [4] and are the colours also found on the coat of arms of "the Ancient City of Dublin" and the Flag of Munster (which evolved from the coat of arms of the Lordship of Ireland). The Flag of Connacht prominently features blue as well.

As the colours of University College Dublin, the blue and yellow scheme is officially called "St Patrick's Blue and Saffron" and is featured prominently on the institution's coat of arms. They are the original colours of the Catholic University of Ireland and date back to the inception of the College in the 1840s. The colours are used by various sports teams at the university such as such the University College Dublin Rowing Club[5]. For the fencing club at University College Dublin, the blue chosen as their St. Patrick's Blue is "Pantone 295", the same shade of blue as that is used on the pennant of the President of Ireland.[6]

Badge of the Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick. The statutes of the Order prescribed a sky blue riband; the exact shade of blue used varied over time.

Badge of the Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick. The statutes of the Order prescribed a sky blue riband; the exact shade of blue used varied over time.

A group of Sea Scouts associated with St. Patrick's Church in Dalkey near Dublin Port describes their troop neckerchief as "red with a St. Patrick's Blue border."[7]

The Irish Guards, an Irish regiment of the British Army, wear a plume of St. Patrick's Blue in their bearskins. The guards also wear a cap ornament depicting the eight-pointed star of the Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick.[8] Although the last surviving knight died in 1974, the order technically still exists. Knight of the order wore a blue mantle lined with white silk and a blue velvet hat. The ribbands of the order were blue as well.[9][10]

[edit] St. Patrick's Day green

Green, the colour most widely associated with Ireland, with Irish people, and with St. Patrick's Day in modern times, may have become gained its prominence through the phrase "the wearing of the green" meaning to wear a shamrock on one's clothing. At many times in Irish history to do so was seen as a sign of Irish nationalism or loyalty to the Roman Catholic faith. St. Patrick used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish.[11] The change to Ireland's association with green rather than blue was probably begun around the 1750s.[12]

WHEAT FIELD

The blockade of Ukrainian ports is creating serious economic consequences around the world. Without stopovers on the Black Sea, the failure to export especially wheat and corn risks having dramatic implications in many countries of the world that source their supplies from here. Italy, compared to other countries, has a more limited dependence on cereals than Russia and Ukraine: it is 2.5% for durum wheat, 5% for soft wheat and 15% for corn

As the temperature falls and the crowds in Central Park begin to thin out, the "Bad Portrait" guy must think of relocating his operation to a park bench in the South where the climate is more hospitable to an outdoor artist. But he isn't worried. After all there seem to be plenty of folks all over the country who are willing to shell out $5 for a "Bad Portrait."
