A Little Joe helper has just cut off the front of an XL Special on a beautiful July afternoon at Avery, ID.
Through a remarkable piece of cooperation several months in the making, Network Rail, Virgin Trains East Coast, the National Railway Museum and Hitachi came together to organise a very special celebration of East Coast Main Line trains from the past, present and future on 23rd April 2017. Billed as a once-in-a-generation event, four generations of motive power travelled together along the four track section of railway from Tollerton to York, running under a full line posession.
After a photo stop alongside The Sidings hotel, the formation was broken as Hitachi's Class 800 'Azuma' No. 800101 accelerated away from the other three trains, disappointing many of the onlookers gathered at the overbridge on Overton Road. However, it could be argued that we were lucky to get a more unique view. LNER Class A3 No. 60103 "Flying Scotsman", a Virgin Trains East Coast MKIV set led by Class 82 DVT No. 82205 and a HST led by Class 43 power car No. 43238 "National Railway Museum 40 Years 1975-2015" pass the "Edinburgh 200 Miles" sign as they continue towards Skelton Junction and York.

After a photo stop alongside The Sidings hotel, Hitachi's Class 800 'Azuma' No. 800101 accelerated away from the other three trains at the request of an advertising director filming the event for future publicity. Although this was a disppointment to many it was still a spectacular event to witness.

In an adventure before the holiday adventure, Christian and I travelled to and around Germany by train this year.
Here's our quick itinerary of the trains:
17 December:
1) Virgin Train to London
2) Eurostar to Brussels
3) Thalys to Cologne
4) ICE to Berlin
23 December
1) IC to Koblenz
2) RB (Germany's slowest and dullest train but sometimes the most picturesque) to Wittlich
29 December
1) IC Trier to Luxembourg
2) IC to Brussels
3) Eurostar to London
4) Virgin Train to Preston
5) Transpennine Express to Lancaster
This adds up to approximately 1.5 straight days spent on trains. The different rail companies should get in touch with their thankyou letters.
We were so very lucky to miss all of the Eurostar horrors that happened in the week before Christmas. Most of our trains were reasonably on time, except for the ICE to Berlin. 1 hour late, but they did apologise and give us all a free drink from the Bord Bistro. Christian and I also took advantage of their nice onboard restaurant for our dinner, which is where I took this photo. Travel in style!
