This is a spectacular looking bird in its breeding plumage and one of my favorites for flight photography. The birds are resident to the country and are in their prime breeding plumage right now. They turn white with gold colored mane on the back of their necks - the transformation is really remarkable.
During the monsoon season the birds are usually very active. We can hear their calls near the lakes very easily. I shot this near one lake which has a low embankment road, there were 2 pairs trying to pair up. I am not sure whether its the male chasing the female or vice versa (both look alike), but this one followed after another one all over the banks.
A few others I sighted on another part of the lake had paired, they were sticking to each other. The nest building is on a lotus leaf where they lay the eggs. After that, the female leaves the male to find another partner, while the male takes over full parental duties.

A spectacular looking resident wader and one of my favorites for flight photography. The birds are resident to the country and starting to turn into breeding plumage. Late summer to end of raiiny season is their breeding season and they turn bright white from pale brown plumage and develop gold colored mane on the back of their necks.
The nesting season is in starting and we could hear their calls in the wetlands. I also sighted several birds in non-breeding plumage while few like this are midway between the two plumages. This adult was flying to and fro and the nearby lake to the place where the others are foraging on the lake banks. There are some predators nearby - feral dogs, Swamphens, and maybe an occasional Brahminy kite.

A remarkable butterfly with spectacular camouflage and one that I have been wanting to sight and photography for a while. This one closely resembels a dry leaf with dark veins and unless one knows where to look - is impossible to find. The other side is a mixture of bright yellowish orange and blue color - total contrast to this dry leaf camo.
We sighted this in a forest in the summer when they were dried leaf litter all around us. Luckily my friend sighted this leaf on a large tree and that is how we could tell there was a butterfly. Apparently, the bird has two forms, a dry season form as in this picture and a wet season form where the colors are richer and darker as if soaked in wetness. I haven't seen that form yet, but maybe next time.
