I really don't know why I expended a valuable frame of Kodachrome transparency film on a relatively new 4-VEP EMU in 1970, but perhaps few images of these units in the as-delivered livery are around, 'cos the subject matter was most certainly boring at the time, if not still so! Here unit No,7706 with the small yellow warning panel and the all over blue livery as delivered, was captured working a down stopping service near Hook on 2nd May 1970.

Sunrise was at 4.45am but it was quite light before 4am and there was already colour developing on the horizon. There was no wind and the sea was very calm. That 45 minutes of early morning tranquillity was lovely.

Maiko (舞妓?) is an apprentice geiko (not exactly same as geisha) in Kyoto, western Japan. Their jobs consist of performing songs, dances, and playing the shamisen or Koto (Traditional Japanese musical instruments) for visitors during feasts. Maiko are usually aged 15 to 20 years old and become geiko after learning how to dance the traditional kyomai dances, play the shamisen, and learning Kyō-kotoba, a dialect of Kyoto.
