A tenderless Great Western Railway Hall class 4-6-0 4953 Pitchford Hall stands in the rain at Quorn, Great Central Railway waiting for its road transport to arrive for its journey to the Epping and Ongar Railway, 28th November 2019. Fresh from overhaul it had arrived at the Great Central Railway for “running in” at the beginning of October 2019.

Locomotive History

Pitchford Hall is one of three hundred and thirty Great Western Hall class locomotives and was built at Swindon works entering traffic in August 1929 allocated to Bristol Bath Road MPD. During the next thirty three years it would be allocated to Weymouth (1930, 1932), Old Oak Common (1930), Westbury (1931), Bristol Bath Road (1933), Taunton (1934), Penzance (1935), Truro (1935), Pontypool Road (1941), Cardiff Canton (1946, 1962), Swindon (1956) Bristol St Phillips Marsh (1960) and finally Cardiff East Dock (1962) from where it was withdrawn in May 1963. Following withdrawal it was sold to Woodham Brothers, Barry for breaking up. However after twenty years at Barry it was sold for preservation and left for Thingley Junction in 1984 before moving to Tyseley for restoration to mainline standards. On Saturday, 7th February 2004 4953 moved under its own power for the first time in forty years.
