Horned Grebes are fairly common spring and fall migrants and winter residents here in New Jersey. Wintering birds are found mainly along the coast, especially in protected bays. I photographed this grebe on a recent November morning at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. He was one of three birds I spotted in Turtle Cove, diving occasionally for their morning meal.
