The Grade I Listed Waddesdon Manor a country house in Buckinghamshire
In 1874, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild bought the Waddesdon agricultural estate from the Duke of Marlborough with money inherited from his father Anselm. Rothschild was familiar with the estate from fox hunting in the locality. At the time of purchase, the estate had no house, park or garden. The site of the future Manor House was a bare hill. Known as Lodge Hill, it had been stripped of its timber by the impoverished Duke of Marlborough prior to the sale.
The manor is built in Neo-Renaissance style, copying individual features of several French châteaux for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild as a weekend residence for entertaining and to house his collection of arts and antiquities.
The first house party was held in May 1880 with seven of Rothschild's close male friends enjoying a fireworks display. When, finally, the main house was ready in 1883, Rothschild invited 20 guests to stay. Before his premature death in 1898, on weekends between May and September Rothschild was host to many important guests including the future king Edward VII. House parties usually involved 14 to 20 guests.
Guests commented on the level of luxury service provided by the 24-house staff. In 1890, Queen Victoria unusually requested to pay a visit. She was impressed with the beauty of the house and grounds as well as Rothschild's ability to quietly manage the day's events. She was struck by the newly installed electric lights designed to look like candles in the chandeliers, and it is reported that she asked for the room to be darkened to fully witness the effect.
As the manor and estate have passed through three generations of the Rothschild family, the contents of the house expanded to become one of the most rare and valuable collections in the world.
In 1957, James de Rothschild bequeathed the house and its contents to the National Trust, opening the house and gardens for the benefit of the public. Unusually for a National Trust property, the family of James Rothschild, the donor, manage the house. The Rothschild Foundation, chaired by Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild, acts as custodian and continues to invest in the property.

Comments (pertain to pictures in the Flicker album Borago officinalis): Borago officinalis is a species of Mediterranean origin. However, today it is spread all around the world. In several European countries it is considered introduced and in others already naturalized. The Euro-Med Plant Base (Ref.1) shows quite unusual distribution of it. The occurrences appear to be divided into two large regions, west and north, with many central and eastern European countries in between, where it is supposed to be introduced. Slovenia is marked as a country where it doesn't grow, which is definitely wrong. Slovenian plant key (Ref.2) names the species in the Sub-Mediterranean region of the country and the FloVegSi Data Base (Ref. 4) includes 18 observations in the country.
Borago officinalis is a plant, which cannot be confused with any other. Its habit, nodding, intensive blue flowers and very strong hairiness make it very easy to be recognize. It is a very old medical plant sometimes still grown in gardens from where it often goes wild. Its wrinkled, gray-green, hairy leaves are edible according to many sources, other claim it is weakly poisonous and potentially causing allergies.

This picture has been included because it was taken from the footbridge that was erected at Northampton Castle station while the station was being rebuilt. You can see evidence of reconstruction everywhere on September 21 1965 as Class 8F 2-8-0 No 48526 reverses north to pick up a freight. Do you prefer classic 1880s LNWR or classic 1960s BR?

A reboot of an 2010 posting for the hell of it!
The end of steam at Bolton shed and LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0s 48652 & 48319 line up alongside the makeshift loading gauges which I believe are for judging the overhead on electrified lines.
48319 had been transferred from Heaton Mersey on the 4th May when that shed closed to steam. It came in convoy with 48526 & 92118 and me and my mate rode on the 9F to Newton Heath.
Beyond the engines the LYR main line to Manchester can be seen. The shed itself is off shot to the right.

From the lock there is a nice walking path through the Naardermeer to some bunkers. From there you can make some nice pictures of trains coming from Amsterdam. I had plenty of time to return to a spot for the Cellulose train, but it was running 60 minutes early - nice surprise ;))
