The last shot before leaving Yellowstone NP on our last visit there. The Mountain Bluebird was the first new species when we got there, seen days before, and it was only fitting that, as we were hiking the Old Faithful trail that this little thrush was singing to us.
The mountain bluebird is a small migratory thrush that is found in mountainous districts of western North America. This was supposedly breeding season and, for some reason, I thought the male would be bluer than what we found. At the same time, it is a gorgeous sky blue and I'd welcome it back to my home range which is the wintering range for the species. But, as far as I know, the last mountain bluebird seen on Mt. Diablo was one I found dead, as I was biking past. I picked the poor little guy up, and rode my bike down the mountain and delivered it into the hands of the ranger on duty. That was May, 1980.

This is the central part of the nebula IC 4603 surrounding the bright star SAO 184376 which illuminates the blue reflection nebula. IC 4603 can be seen near the very bright star Antares toward the constellation of Ophiuchus. IC4603 is one small part of the Ophiuchus cloud complex. The impressionistic effect is created by large amounts of interstellar dust, minute globs of carbon similar in size to cigarette smoke. This dust frequently occurs in the outer atmospheres of large, cool, evolved stars. Dense dust clouds are opaque to visible light and can completely hide background stars. For less dense clouds, it preferentially reflects blue starlight, effectively marking the surrounding dust boundary. Text borrowed from APOD
