Kenting National Park was Taiwan's first national park. In 1977, for the purpose of alleviating environmental damage caused by farming and building in Kenting area, late president (then premier) Chiang Jing-Guo instructed that "preservation of natural resources and the ecosystem must be taken into consideration during construction practices; plans should be made to establish a national park in Kenting area".

Dazzling bright sunshine, azure blue seawater, clean shining sand beach…, This is Taiwan’s first national park－Kenting, renowned for its rich landscape of hills and water, abundant life, and natural resources for everyone’s enjoyment.

Kenting National Park is located at the southern tip of Taiwan. With warm climate, pleasant scenery, and easy access, it is one of the most popular resorts, attracting millions of both domestic and foreign tourists every year.

墾丁國家公園成立於1984年1月，是我國第一座成立的國家公園，三面臨海，為我國少數同時涵蓋陸域與海域的國家公園之一，海域面積15206.09公頃、陸域面積18083.50公頃，合計共33,289.59公頃。由於百萬年來地殼運動不斷的作用，陸地與海洋彼此交蝕影響，造就了本區高位珊瑚礁、海蝕地形、崩崖地形等奇特的地理景觀。特殊的海陸位置加上熱帶氣候的催化，此孕育出豐富多變的生態樣貌，海岸林帶的植物群落尤其特殊罕見，每年還有大批候鳥自北方飛來過冬，數量之多蔚為奇觀；海底的珊瑚景觀更是繽紛絢麗，為墾丁國家公園妝點出卓絕風貌。

由社頂公園沿新開闢之道路南下約4公里，在海岸珊瑚礁前緣，可見到一巨石矗立於海中，遠望似艘即將啟碇的帆船，因而得名，近看則像美國前總統尼克森的頭部令人發笑。船帆石高約18公尺，係由附近台地上方滾落至海邊的舊期珊瑚礁石，因其岩質較附近之初期隆起珊瑚礁堅硬，故能長期屹立海中，由台地上方可見到它巨大的珊瑚礁岩即為明證。船帆石四週已規劃為國民旅館、停車場、野外育樂用地等，鄰近的香蕉灣昔為捕鯨基地和鯨魚處理廠，目前已無任何設施遺留。可見由於人類無盡的貪婪，使得鯨魚在臺灣南部幾近絕跡，再也不能偶見鯨魚噴水的奇景了。
