This is the Golden Gate (Zolotye Vorota) of the city of Vladimir, completed in 1164. I got out early with a tripod on a Sunday morning, so early the nightclubs on Bolshaya Moskovskaya were emptying out their last patrons. An icon of Jesus Christ the Saviour is placed over the arch on this, the western side; an icon of the Mother of God (Blessed Virgin) is placed over the arch on the eastern side. The church on top of the gate is known as the Church of the Deposition of the Robe. The gate survived the Mongol invasion and occupation - but only just: Empress Catherine the Great ordered that it be renovated in the 17th century.
