I really do enjoy the fulll California Poppy experience. They run wild in my yard, front and back. I started them from seeds in a small flower bed and over the years they've spread to completely surround my home. It's OK, though they're really messy by June or July as the plants peak out, fall over, turn ugly. So I have tried for this season to somewhat limit their areas. This is the first plant to flower (a few days ago), right on time. Oddly, it's not a good looking plant - you can see some of the leaves have already fried in sun and some nasty dry winds we've had. If you've never had a CA Poppy experience, it goes like this. The cap comes off the bud. The flower unfurls in the warmth of the sun. If it's cloudy, cold and windy, it just might not unfurl. And they wrap up tight again in the afternoon, to do it all over again the next day. Pretty smart, huh. The bloom here is a few days old, and looked a bit dry when it finally unfurled today, so I'll have to wait to show you a fresh one. I did note a third bloom coming on this plant today, and two other plants had new buds as well.

The three GE's working on the tailend of a double loaded grain train pass a waiting vehicle train at Spotted Robe. The grain train's mid-train set of units can be seen above the radiator of BNSF 4424, while the headend is now completely out of sight.
