Male peregrine falcon and the first sunlight.

Early in the morning, the cliff behind him is in shade with just a bit of light on the falcon. (shot underexposed to get this result)

A short LM is wasting no time as they battle Mullan Pass.

I almost didn't bother going out for this shot. I had spent the entire day on Mullan Pass after camping all night on a chilly rainy night. I checked into my motel in Helena after four nights of camping. I showered, had dinner and just wanted to lay around in the air conditioning.

Thanks to a flip crew out of Missoula, the LM got a quick start out of Missoula. I was looking at the sky, and it was starting to clear up after 100% overcast and rain most of the day. I went back and forth, and decided I might as well go for a quick chase over Mullan and possibly shoot the train to Garrison as there was enough daylight left, if the sun were out.

After watching the train in clouds at Tobin, I blasted ahead of the train on the way to Austin. There was just a sliver of sun near Birdseye so I slowed and waited. Eventually the train approached and the sliver of sun crossed paths in precision timing. Sure, it would have been a little better around 30 seconds later when the train passed the signal and I had a wider shot.

Not quite satisfied with this shot, I opted to move forward. A little closer to Austin, there was another fan shooting. I think he ended up getting the better shot. I shot one more at the ESS Austin and only had EOS. Unfortunately, there was a series of events that were frustrating and put a quick end to the fun for the day... read all about it here:

A trio of Rana AC4400CW's and a Ex-UP SD70M (UP 4679) recently bought by the Ferrocarril del Itsmo de Tehuantepec pass by the north end switch of the Acultzingo siding with a Tierra Blanca bound manifest train in tow.

The crew service time will ran out here so a short stop is programmed to let the new crew get on-board and take it to the Orizaba yard, for yet another crew change.
