High up in a giant acacia a mother leopard rests with her young cub. Cubs are born with their eyes closed. These open about one week after birth, but she will keep them hidden for weeks before introducing them to the open wild. Even with her vigilant care cub mortality rates approach 50% in just the first year. The number seems terribly high, but even lion cubs suffer similar numbers. The branches of this tree offer some safety from other predators, less able to scale these large trees of the Serengeti. Leopards with frequently drag a kill high up into tree branches to protect what they have captured for future meals. At about 3 to 4 months of age this cub will accompany mom out on hunts. It teaches valuable lessons but also increases the risks that the cub could be injured or killed. such is the enigma of raising young of all species. Motherly love seems almost universal, but overprotection leads to inexperience, and the opposite, to potential injury or worse.
