MRL's Day Gas dodges a westbound Rail Grinder at Evaro as a road foreman gives them a rollby. After meeting a work train at Perma, and the grinder here, it's evident that Maintenance season is in full swing on the MRL.

MRL's Day Gas blasts past a farmstead in Ravalli as it slingshots east towards Missoula. The quick decision to jump out and try for a shot here was timed well, with the locomotives emerging from cloud cover as they approached the crossing.
A heavy ML is working hard as they make the trek over Bozeman Pass.
In all of my trips to the MRL, this was my first train I've witnessed helpers needed for an eastbound. The four on the front were accompanied by a typical Bozeman Helper in the form of ACe-40-ACe.
The helper shoved a coal drag over the pass and stayed on for the ride to Bozeman. After meeting the ML, the helpers got to the ass end of the ML and strapped on. The train was on their knees as they worked their way east. If I remember correctly the crew also sounded astonished at their nearly 9000' train.
Certainly longer than your typical ML/LM.
