Tay Bridge's pilot 08736 removes the stock off the recently arrived 2L31 08.44 Glasgow Queen St to Dundee stopping service. The pilot will move the stock out past the signal box and propel it into one of the two dock platforms. 40066 can just about be seen in the station behind.

Sitting patiently on the bench waiting for another train to stop or pass by, this train caught me unawares. It blazed past the station at such a speed that I could barely manage to get my camera out and click like only two or three photographs.

Haymarket allocated 40066 heads south on the East Coast Main Line past Darlington with a freight, 31st May 1978.

Locomotive History

40066 was originally D266 and was built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry works in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. D266 entered traffic in March 1960, allocated to Haymarket MPD and would remain a Haymarket engine for most of its career. Although built with gangway doors and train headcode discs D266 was, along with all of Haymarkets early allocation of class 40’s (D260 – D266) modified during the mid 1960’s to the final class 40 nose end design fitted to D345 onwards. This entailed having the disc indicators removed, nose end doors plated over, and a four character centre headcode panel installed. Why this modification was only fitted to these seven engines at this time I do not know. After twenty one years a Haymarket engine it it was withdrawn in April 1981 following a main generator failure. It was broken up at Swindon Works during October 1981.

I allway's liked photographing at Queen Street Glasgow as it is such a compacked station and there was plenty going on. Above Class 26 26008 waits with a service to Oban as Class47'7 47712 is ready to leave for Edinburgh Waverley. I had a permit for Eastfield and Haymarket that day' I cameup from Birmingham with 81013. then had 47706 from Queen's Street to Waverley and 47708 back, and home with 87020 from Glasgow Central. A great day out with plenty of pictures taken O how I miss those day's and all on a cheap Saturday ticket. KC. 28/06/1980.

With literally only a few weeks service left in it, Stagecoach Wigan Optare Excel 35028 climbes Helvellyn Road on the Norley Hall estate whilst working service 621.

This was formerly operating with First Manchester, hence the livery, and was part of the fleet inherited by Stagecoach with the Wigan operation in early December 2012.

Wigan had been home to the Excels for some years, and it's worth noting that First Manchester never had the type from new, Timeline Travel and Leicester providing the bulk with four short specimens coming from Capital Citybus via First PMT. This was one of the latter examples and the last of the quartet of shorties. All the remaining Excels were withdrawn on Christmas Eve 2012.

The signals are off as 27016 and 40066 prepare to bank their train out of Glasgow Queen St c 1980.

I had come up from Birmingham New Street with Class 81 81003 and came to Queen Street to take a few pictures before going round Eastfield Depot. Here is Class 37 37027 waiting with the 08:43 to Dundee. Also here were : 25046/75. 26008. 27042/101/105/210. 37027/81. 40066/159/161/164. 47147/204/206/269/270/271. 47703/6/12. After visiting Eastfield I had 47706 to Haymarket went round the depot, then had 47708 back to Glasgow and 87020 back to Birmingham New Street. Those cheap Saturday tickets to Glasgow/Edinburgh were a bargain and I had many day visit's to Scotland . Great Times KC. 28/06/1980.

the 16th of April 1960 and Class 40 D266 is on what looks like a Coal Train at Longniddry.

The loco was only 1 month old at the time and had not been fitted with the headcode box which the Scottish Region added to its Disc 40's later on.

Stagecoach Wigan Opatre Excel 35028 climbs up Helvellyn Road on Norley Hall estate with Winter Hill and the West Pennine Moors providing a scenic backdrop.

The bus had been new to Capital Citybus as their 703 and arrived in Wigan via First PMT, where it joined Excels from Leicester and ones aquired by First Manchester with the Timeline Travel business in 1998. Latterly numbered 40066, it passed to Stagecoach with the Wigan operations of First Manchester on Sunday 3rd December 2012 and apart from new names and fleetnumbers applied over the old ones, it looks pretty much the same as it did when with First...........only cleaner!

Having visited Frances Colliery on 20 January 1978, I took a couple of pictures at the closed Dysart station before moving onto Muir's scrapyard at Easter Balbeggie in the afternoon. 40066 ambles through with a down mixed goods; in the foreground is, I think, the connection with the colliery, which closed in 1988.
