Paul Patton, American

b. 1921, Rix Mills, OH; d. 1999, Cleveland, OH

Medium: Acrylic on canvas

Paul Patton was raised in the small, rural, Appalachian town of Rix Mills, Ohio. A trained pilot and educator, Patton was also a self-taught artist. With no formal artistic training, Patton painted hundreds of naturalistic "memory paintings" that recall a lost way of life in rural America. He was inspired to paint the picnics, winter outings, and campfires in the fields, rivers, and hills of his youth after he returned to Rix Mills in 1985 and found the town and landscape unrecognizable due to the impact of strip-mining in the region. As a folk artist, Patton's colorful, nostalgic compositions, with their simplified figures, flattened forms, and dramatic perspective capture bucolic life in Ohio in the first half of the twentieth century.

I took this photo at an agricultural fair and posted it in 2012. I just downloaded it and tweaked the editing. Thought I'd share it again.

I love agricultural fairs!

The Chevy Chase Inn, at 7100 Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase, Maryland, was built by the Chevy Chase Land Company in 1894 as a summer resort. The company sold the inn to the Chevy Chase College for Young Ladies in 1903. The two older postcards show the original building when it served as a school. The college remained and expanded on the site until 1950, when it closed. The National 4-H Foundation then purchased the site for a youth conference center, moving in in 1958. The 4-H rebuilt and greatly expanded the facility into a sizable campus but recently announced that it will be selling the property for reuse or potential redevelopment.

4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

The four-H's stand for: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. They represent the four points of the 4-H pledge: clearer thinking, greater loyalty, larger service, and better living.

4-H is the youth development program of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, an off-campus program, conducted by Virginia Tech and Virginia State Universities. It is an informal, hands-on education approach focusing on building lifelong learning skills that develop youths' potential. 4-H is a learn-by-doing program for youth ages 5-19.

4-H programs are designed to engage youth in healthy learning experiences, thus increasing self-esteem and problem-solving skills. Youth involvement is by way of community clubs, special interest projects and groups, camps, and special school activities.

4-H projects cover a wide range of subjects such as citizenship, animal science, natural resources and environmental education, family sciences, foods, nutrition, and health, careers and economic education, leadership and personal development and plants, soils, and entomology. A child can concentrate on one subject area or he/she can become involved with a variety of subjects.

During the 2023 National 4-H Conference, youth participants participated in various federal agency roundtables on Monday, April 17th, 2023, from 9.30 am to 10.30 am in the Press Room (107-A) at the Whitten Building at the USDA Headquarter in Washington D.C. Youth had the opportunity to present to more than 20 federal agencies. This year, USDA hosted one roundtable with a Zoom option. USDA acting Deputy Secretary Kevin Shea, Research, Education, and Economics Deputy Under Secretary Sanah Baig and Under Secretary of Agriculture for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Jenny Moffitt attended the roundtable to hear youth input on suggested recommendations for better youth engagement in ASCEND (Agricultural Science Center of Excellence for Nutrition and Diet) for Better Health. The 4-H team presented an overview of the problem on their suggestions in about 30 minutes and then the remaining time was used to ask them questions about their approach and the path forward. Susan Garey, Animal Science Extension Agent and a group of expert volunteers and camp counselors held a day-and-a-half overnight cow camp to hone skills for youth involved in FFA, 4-H and who are also Junior Showman at the Delaware State Fair. Some campers have access to cows on their family farm, others lease them for a year, or in some instances, borrow to take care of a heifer during the camp. Experienced or not, these young campers enjoy the opportunity to get to know their calves, learn about biosecurity, animal welfare, advocating their personal ag story, animal health, grooming and showmanship. For campers participating in the Delaware State Fair, this camp is excellent preparation.
