The Lower Austrian Waldviertel is a place full of mysticism and places of power and also offers a lot of unusual photo motifs.

Besides the Great Globe, there are sacrificial stones, huge wobbling stones, and even an impressive step pyramid.

After many many many grey, rainy weekends, on Sunday we got our first sunny weekend day in months. High on my list was the "Ersatzverkehr" between Hanau and Giessen in Hessen. Due to a shortage of EMUs, DB has hired replacement trains from CentralBahn AG to fill in. The actual rolling stock is leased from DB Gebrauchtzug, the recently created division which offers older locomotives and wagons for sale or lease. A number of locomotives have received retro schemes worn by locomotives of the class in the past or in a few cases semi-fictional schemes. So the stock has been mainly leased to other branches of DB, another creative accounting tricks probably. Anyways.....

After an early 4:40 AM wake up call I headed out by train towards the Main-Wetzlar Bahn. At Frieberg I boarded the replacement train behind the retro 111-174 and got down at Kirch-Göns. After about a 40 minute wait the set returned south in the perfect morning sun light. A great start to what would be a productive day.

Left the homestead at 4:40 a.m and arrived at my destination almost two hours later. My goal? a Great Gray Owl. I spent two and a half hours searching. When I decided to call it a day and head home, I took one last glance to the east and then turned around to head to my car. And there it was floating into a nearby tree. I spent the next socially distanced hour and a half with it until it flew off into the forest to sleep off the day. Lots more photos to come.

Walked over the other end of the "ship" to get the sunlight shining on the stones and casting long shadows. A few moments later the sun was hidden by the clouds and the scenery totally changed character.

Another shot from January and the trip to Isle of Skye. Sun never managed to break through the clouds this morning.

Sunday morning and the sun dial reads 5:16 am.

I don’t know your name. You don’t have a name as such. But your friends and family know you and recognize you some other way that is outside of my perception. To me, you are the seagull that flew past me on a purple Friday afternoon at 4:40 p.m. You flew so gracefully with your wings almost touching the water.

To me, all seagulls are one Seagull, and I love you! Your calls are as salty and free as the ocean. During this morning’s rainstorm, I looked out my window and saw you soaring high up in the clouds … and I thought how strong you are! No wind or rain can stop you. And how smart and resourceful you are! You live all around the world and you can live in the most remote Arctic ice desert or within a bustling city in Morocco. You are amazing!

And you are beautiful! When I walk with Blanca on the beach and you fly over our heads, I smile a friendly hello to you. You are the voice and the face of the ocean.

Once I came upon you sitting in the sand and dying. I did not intrude upon your death but stood by as a witness. I saw how you used your folded wings to keep you upright when you were getting wobbly. I saw your head lean to one side. And you took a long last look around you. You looked at the beach, at the sea and at the sky. And then you died. I shed a tear for you and knelt down to gently stroke your white head. And I discovered with surprise how very soft and warm you are.

But that wasn’t you who flew past me on a purple Friday at 4:40 p.m. As long as there are oceans, there will be seagulls. And as long as there are seagulls, I know life goes on.

Be free and strong!

Claudia

Maybe I've choosen a somehow optimistic title for that picture, as the sun was already setting at Großer Ahornboden and would be away after further 5-10 minutes, but the scenery remembers me at this song and the feeling behind.

And anyway, for sure, the sunshine will come in again.
