Okay. So... fi-i-inally, I've managed to get off my butt and do some shooting.
Here's what inspired me.
Every August, a local group shows free B movies in a downtown park. This year they're all in 3D... so I figured I might get some decent shots of the glassed-up crowd. Like this.
Turned out the spectacle wasn't nearly as a photo-worthy as I'd hoped. I had imagined a giant screen... projecting cool things all across the landscape... not unlike the drive-in movies of my youth.
But the screen was tiny, and the place where they show the flicks is quite cut off from the rest of the park. So I did shoot what I'd come to shoot. But I found myself much more drawn to the trees (my old friends, the trees) and the stars and... holy moly... the gardens. By the time I thought to check in with Husband Mike it was very late and he was on his way to bed. And it seemed so weird because... there I was... me, the perennial early-to-bedder... out in the dark and wide awake and itching to check out a few other places.
Funny how that keen awakeness faded as soon as I got in my truck. Something about the switch from wide-open abstract thought to focused functional driving made me realize how utterly exhausted I was.
I realized something else, too.
After a long (for me) spell of not shooting... I was ready to try some different things with my camera that I'm sure I wouldn't have got to if I'd just kept plodding on. Like... for this shot... I bumped up my ISO to 800... for the first time ever. Like... where has THAT been all my life? Right there on my camera. But... you know how it is. You get into your routines, and you get used to applying the same old "solutions" no matter what kinds of problems you encounter.
Anyway... for those of you who care... I'm b-a-a-a-ck. And I'm setting aside a block of time tomorrow to catch up on other people's posts.

(Para ver la imagen en 3D hay que cruzar los ojos hasta que aparezca una tercera imagen en medio de las dos; luego, seguir enfocando, hasta que las dos imágenes se unifiquen en el centro; sin dejar de mirar al centro, intentar relajar la vista hasta ver una imagen nítida y enfocada).

You know: who can see this beautiful beetle in 3D?
(To see the image in 3D, you have to cross your eyes until a third image appears in the middle of the two; then, continue focusing, until the two images are unified in the center; while looking at the center, try to relax the view until you see a sharp, focused image).
Under the category "I don't care if it's true I want to believe it"; there is a story that this device was Phil Lynott's amp until he could afford proper equipment. I'm sure it's true.
At a particular time on a particular day a shadow appeared in front of me on my morning walk in the park. I did a double take because the shadow of the railings that you would expect to be two-dimensional appeared as three. Unexpected and seen anew this image left me wondering about perception of space, of volume and the unique truth of shadows.

There is hope that in Summer the price for high end graphic cards will drop - which is what I am waiting for to buy a new computer to make some fancier stuff.
No just ordinary red bricks, but also 3D printed ceramic tiles, whose form references the craft of knitting garments.

The direction of the light, shadows, color contrasts and the sharp change in DOF between the flower and background seem to create a 3D effect, and to me, the flower looks to pop out from the background. Found references that possibly Zeiss lens character could be one of the reason.

This is an anaglyph of an Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Wide Angle Camera (WAC) mosaic of the lunar nearside taken at low-Sun conditions. You will need 3D stereo glasses to see it pop off your screen!
The two perspectives that make up this anaglyph were generated by draping the same low-Sun WAC mosaic of the lunar nearside over the Global Lunar DTM (Digital Terrain Model) 100 m topographic model (GLD100) with two different sub-Earth points.
Planetary scientists use anaglyphs to visualize the 3D structure of planetary surfaces. For example, the HiRISE team has over three thousand anaglyphs of the Martian terrain available for scientific study and public use. This type of visualization is helpful with the intuitive and qualitative interpretation of a scene by revealing geologic relationships that are not obvious from a single 2D image.
