An early digital from 2009, Louisville & Indiana's "CJ" makes haste north of Sellersburg. Just for laughs, I always referred to the green and yellow locomotives as "green weenies." LIRC was always fun to chase, what with a daily afternoon northbound departure along with the sights of cars bouncing on the old jointed rail and the sound of those 38's roaring.

Back in 2009, the L563 local is on the roll out of Waterloo as they hit their 1st major drift east of Raymond. This job ran out of Waterloo with 2 GP 38's and 7 cars. Their mission was to get all the work done on the Dubuque Sub between Jesup and Farley, and then plow the Cedar Rapids branch later on to get to the yard and start on work in Cedar Rapids.

Train #119 was my only shot this day but is was a memorable one with those former SLSF GP 38's.

Its Feb 1982 were at Des Plaines IL with Milwaukee road northbound going under the semaphores of the CNW

Three blue and gold 38’s lead NECR 608 south through St. Edward Cemetery in Stafford Springs, CT.

Two GP-38's have westbound train #324 moving along as they cross the New Meadows River for a sunny "Trestle Thursday" view. The best I can tell, this is a very long inlet coming up from the Gulf of Maine, but Last MEC Dispatcher below informed me it's the New Meadows River, which is a 12 mile long "Tidal River". Train #324 is the regular Rockland to Brunswick and back job, but this day he also has ballast hoppers on the head end. That was due to MEC performing some track improvements on this branch in 1981.

Eastbound loaded coal train with four Red CC&P GP-38's in Carol stream IL

Four Southern GP38-2’s and a GP38 wheel a southbound TOFC train through Catlett, Virginia.

We lucked out to get the EJE 703 leading on the 586/565 jobs Sunday at Dubuque. We chased 565 out of Dubuque towards the setting sun as they headed to Manchester and back. West of Julien the 2-38's bark loud as they climb the grade out of Dubuque with 44 cars. There wasn't much light in the valley so we got them here and I tried a fancy drone shot as the light faded.

Another re-scan from a post here on Flickr from about 6 years ago that needed a bit of attention.

An assortment of modified 38's are in charge of this eastbound Canadian American/CDAC train as it catches the last rays of sun at Bury, Quebec and climb to Gould Summit.

A gaggle of P&LE 38's lead an Eastbound freight at the station in Aliquippa, PA on May 21, 1992. The P&LE became a fallen flag in September 1992.

Its March 2009 southbound coal leaving Joliet IL going past former Michigan Central tower

After yesterday's photostream posting, westbound train #324 continues it's way through the town of Wiscasset. The two GP-38's carefully make their way down the tracks located between the town center and the Sheepscot River. Based on comments yesterday from some of the locals, all those neat old buildings are gone now too. What a shame but it's the way it goes way too often.

Three GP-38's on BR-4 have just finished with the pickup off the BAR at Northern Maine Junction, and are now in launch mode not horsing around getting out of town. The horse says he already knows those guys do this every day, and is more concerned with what the stranger from Ohio might be up to......

its near sunset in Addsion IL with IC GP-40's with Mars light just went under Route 53 way before they built I -355 .so much has changed in this photo .The Walkman tall tails are long gone and the line poles and so is the IC RR

Roaring up the hill near Milepost 5 west of Silver Bay, NSM 651 lifts this morning's loaded train of ore tailings to the pond to be dumped.

I'm glad to see NSM will be back in business this year once it restarts ops in April. I wish I could be there to hear those 38's work again.

Over the coarse of the past few weeks', Zachary had said to me a few times that he grabbed some old Logan boxes to see some "Old stuff" I have in the collection. I certainly do not consider 2003 to be old, however looking back, I guess it is. Back in 2003 on the New England Central, the jobs from Palmer to New London usually ran with matched blue and gold GP38's, while the road trains killed us with former UP and GATX patched leasers. Schedules were very favorable for chasing, especially on weekends and many of us took full advantage of it. So I guess I'll raise my coffee cup this morning to this one of train 608 with 4 matched 38's cruising through downtown Stafford Springs, CT on a chilly October 2003 morning. Today, we do not live in "normal" times, and there are only a few of the painted NECR Geeps left, making it a rarity.

Four Conrail four-axle EMD’s lead westbound empty hoppers past the steel mill in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Lehigh Valley’s four GP38AC’s became the only examples of that model on Conrail’s roster. Although I never saw one leading a train after the Conrail takeover, they did show up from time to time in trailing positions, as seen here.

Scanned slide from June 1998, the CCP could put together some consists of junk some days, but then some days they looked damn good. I had to lay off on call at the IMRL to go get this eastbound grain train leaving Waterloo. Those damn flat tires! This was way more important looking back now, then moving another IMRL train. An eastbound grain train is ready to depart Waterloo bound for Chicago with 4 red 38's!

The evening Manchester turn job has made good time across the Dubuque Sub with a short 13 car train. The train will setout at Manchester, and then do work at Dyersville and Farley on the way east tonight due to haz mat issues westbound. Here they hammer away at 50 mph as they approach Manchester with a couple veteran GTW blue 38's.

Grand Trunk Western train #451 heads west through Andersonville, Michigan enroute back to Durand with 3 GP38AC's in September of 1977.

The Rock's freshly painted 4373 is northbound at Albin, Mississippi during it's debut for the matching pair of 38's on May 23, 2020.

Its April 1984 SOO LINE GP-38 Oshkosh Wis .Its amazing this operations lasted so long street running with this bad track next to the houses

No, Don Knotts is NOT in the building....

But all three of the Massachusetts Central Railroad's Geeps are in Ware, MA. Here they pose for a family photo, all wearing the Boston and Maine inspire Blue Bird Scheme. GP38-2's #1750 and #1751, and GP9 #1749.

Both 38's were built in '72 and spent time as EMD Demonstrators and on the Penn Central. The GP9 was built for in 1956 for the Chesapeake and Ohio, road number 6199.

It stayed cloudy the entire day tht I chased YR-1 with a pair of 38's and a set of recently delivered U18B's . Here they are rolling through Lunenburg Vermont just a few feet from crossing the Connecticut River into New Hampshire. I covered the agency in Gilman on a vacation relief hold down back in 82. What a great job.

There were comments on my shot of the North Train with the set of GP38's, and how people like them without the Mother/Slug set. I ran into this nice 4 pack of 38's at Bryant Yard on my way to work. The bummer was they were on their way to the shop for the day, but man the 3808 looks nice and clean! The IANR has retrofitted some of these 38's with a cylinder looking cover on top of the exhaust on some of the units to probably protect against sparks? Unfortunately one thing it does is collect fuel and then it dips down the middle of the units making them dirty over time. Not all of them have the retrofit.

Hartwell RR's northbound road train trundles back towards Bowersville, GA from the CSX interchange in Elberton with a short train consisting of two loads for Rose Acre Farms and three TTX storage flats.

I-11 looking train begins the trip out of Waterloo bound for Council Bluffs. The train passes thru Susie on the west end of double track at Waterloo. 3 IC 38's help out this aged Paducah. Back in 1997 the IC had just bought back the Iowa Lines from the CCP. Red geeps were going to be a thing of the past real soon!

Scanned Slide from October 1997.

New Hampshire Northcoast's southbound sand train crosses the Salmon Falls River from Milton, NH into Lebanon, ME in the soft evening light of a hot August day. Having been rebuilt earlier this year, GP38-2 3823 looks sharp in its new paint with nose stripes, a feature that had been left out when the '38's were originally painted in NHN colors, as seen on the trailing 3825.

The Rock's freshly painted 4373 is northbound in a "pan shot" at Albin, Mississippi during it's debut for the matching pair of 38's on May 23, 2020.

Originally built for the BAR as their #84 and under the Iron Road ownership it was rebuilt and renumbered as #365 and was equipped with dynamic brakes at that time. After the bankruptcy it wash sold to Watco and renumbered to there #3836. Here it is sitting on the service track along with 2 more 38's in Brownville Jct. That sure was a nice paint scheme.

We go back to April 1982 a GTW train with DT&I power is about to go under the IC main and Electric line .Its been almost 35 years i think i have the right location

I took a quick trip up to Iowa City for a wedding this weekend, and while the wedding party was off taking photos after the service, we had a bit of time to kill, so of course my first instinct was to go railfanning.

Fortunately, the Iowa Interstate's BICB was rolling through Coralville just as we settled in at the hotel, so I was happy to follow it west on US 6 for a bit. Here, it's pulling up to the Yocum Connection at South Amana, IA in a light snowfall, just about 15 minutes before "sunset."

The power for the train this day was the 503, 715, and the 505. Even if they're trailing, it's nice to see the 38's out on the road these days.

608 heads south through Stafford with two blue and gold 38’s and a widecab 40 leading. While I would have preferred another 38 as the third motor, the lighting was good and I couldn’t complain.

The Waterloo to Butler freight rolls onto the CN Waterloo Sub at West Waterloo. The crew will use CN trackage to gain access back to home rails at Cedar Falls Jct. CN 8800s have been on the property now since April but haven't done much on the north end yet, other than this one spliced between 2 38's. More changes will be coming June 1st.

NECR 608 heads south past an old boat launch in Uncasville with two blue and gold 38's taking charge. Very happy that I decided to hike in here and try a new unshot spot.

A trio of NECR Blue & Gold 38's lead 608 southbound through Tolland, CT on their way to Willimantic.

Long before the arrival of the B&M inspired GP-38's in 2013, the Mass Central RR went about its' business each day with GP-9R 960 and NW-5 2100. Traffic levels usually dictated only one engine, most of the time it would be the 960, but from time to time we were treated to the former Southern Ry 2100. Here, PA-2 makes its trek north to South Barre, passing the village of Gilbertville, MA on June 21, 2013.

We go back to 1990 with southbound EJ&E loaded CC&P coal train at Planfield IL .Today the station has been moved and saved in closer to downtown near the EJ&E River line

Its 1992 eastbound train 50 with three red GP-38's hauling ass through Carol Stream IL

Two freshly rebuilt '38's shine in the fall morning sunshine in October of 2017.

Its the year 2009 the3 final year of the EJ&E we have three SD-38's with a Wheatfield coal train crossing the former CNW at West Chicago IL

Sticking with the same train as yesterday's post, here is the head end of the train coming along the seriously swollen Conneaut Creek with 2 SD-38's as seen from the PC/NYC arched bridge. The ex NKP at that time N&W bridge is the one in the background.

While CMQ's Job 2 passes by the fisherman in the foreground, they were not phased by the passing train rumbling over the bridge. The only thing bothered was the bird flying overhead that flew out of a tree near the tracks. 3 Barns and 2 GP38's lead todays Eastbound, the 38's were along for the ride back to Maine most likely for service.

Getting a unit on the point in corporate paint on the Irving properties seemed to always be a challenge for me. The 6200 came in Brownville Jct on 907 in the wee hours of darkness and a rent a wreck will lead No 908 out and no I didn't photograph it. It only gets worse when you get to the Northern Maine operations as it is mostly powered with 38's and SW's. Maybe they will have more units painted? Who knows.

Three spotless 38's leading ore jennies at Duluth on October 12, 1993 was a common sight on DMIR for a long time. 206, 214 and 213 look fantastic under a blue dome. No photographer to credit on this one but the printing on the slide shouts Ed Kanak to me as does the perfect lighting. Chuck Schwesinger collection.

Southbound Milwaukee Rd train goes under the classic semaphores at Rand rd Near Des Plaines

Hard to believe in 2008, this is what the Iowa Interstate looked like. 4-SD 38's were in charge of this 113 car Iowa City to Cedar Rapids turn. The train is just topping one of the two major hills on the Crandic's Amana line as they head north towards Cedar Rapids. Most of these cars are for ADM in Cedar Rapids. The job still passes thru here everyday, but GEVO's normally are on the menu for power. Too bad the SD38's aren't coming out of storage more.
