A backstreet in the Markt and Burg Quarter in central Bruges, Flanders, Belgium.
Bruges in medieval times was known as a commercial metropolis in the heart of Europe. The city reflects a considerable exchange of influences on the development of art and architecture, particularly in brick Gothic, which is characteristic of northern Europe and the Baltic. This architecture strongly determines the character of the historic centre of the city.
The 11th century city walls marked the boundaries of the medieval city. Although the walls themselves are lost today, they remain clearly visible, emphasized by the four surviving gates, the ramparts and one of the defence water towers. The medieval street pattern, with main roads leading towards the important public squares, has mostly been preserved, as well as the network of canals which, once used for mercantile traffic, played an important role in the development of the city.
In the 15th century, Bruges was the cradle of the Flemish Primitives and a centre of patronage and painting development for artists such as Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. Many of their works were exported and influenced painting styles all over Europe. Exceptionally important collections have remained in the city until today.
Even after its economic and artistic peak at the end of the Middle Ages, building and urban development continued, although Bruges mostly missed the 19th-century industrial revolution. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many medieval parcels were joined to larger entities and new quarters were also developed. The most striking examples of large scale post-medieval interventions in the historic centre are the urbanization around Coupure (1751-1755), the Zand and the first railway station (1838), the Theatre quarter (1867), the Koningin Elisabethlaan and Gulden Vlieslaan (1897) and the creation of the Guido Gezelle-neighbourhood (1920-1930).

In 2010 the German railways celebrated their 175th anniversary. This was celebrated with a few days of regular trains pulled by vintage steam, diesel and electric locomotives in the Eifel. Regular trains were run with historic steam, diesel or electric locomotives. With the four of us (my father, my brother, my oldest son and me) we drove many miles and saw a lot of nice trains.

The line through Stenson to Burton becomes very head on for the light by early afternoon, and so I had a drive up here, just south of Chesterfield.
I don't have a headcode or details for this, as it was a short term working of what looks like old ballast for cleaning or disposal.
To the right of the train is the site of the old Avenue yards, used for traffic to and from the coking plant that was on the hill to the left of the picture.

I have this shot of 37895 down in my notes as Nelson but can't remember taking it or find the location on Google Street View. The train was a Cwmbargoed to Aberthaw MGR service but 26 years on the area is probably totally overgrown. 24th April was a Sunday in 1994 which was one of the better days to visit the scenic branch from Ystrad Mynach as three 37 hauled MGR's were booked in daylight hours. The line is still in use for loading coal, with a few trains each week of industrial coal.
Update: The picture is taken from the B4255 between Nelson and Trelewis, heavily grown up as thought. Thanks to Mr Kenny

37895 - Ballast, which was formed of 7 ZBV Grampus wagons loaded with ballast - Aberthaw - 14/05/88.
After its "Special projects" holiday to Italy with 37893 in July 2001 both returned back in March 2003 and went straight back into mainline service here a rather battered 895 draws the empty coal MEA's out from Clitheroe Castle Cement bound for stabling at Healey Mills yard for the weekend.
The notes for this neg read simply: 37283 at Healey Mills - Sadly no date give but it is certainly between 1980 and 1986.
Class 37 37283 entered service in March 1963 numbered D6819, received its first coat of BR Blue livery in June 1969, and was then renumbered to 37283* under TOPs in February 1974. Then, in September 1986, it entered Crewe works for conversion to Class 37/7 (added ballast, re-geared CP7 bogies, etc.) and emerged in February 1987 wearing the RF large logo grey livery and renumbered to 37895. This livery lasted until early 1991, when the engine was given the RF two-tone grey treatment complete with Coal Sector logos. In September 1996, now an EWS engine, it acquired the maroon and cream livery, which would turn out to be its final coat of paint.
July 2001 saw 37895 dispatched to Italy for work on the high speed line engineering contract there, returning to the UK in March 2003, but then dumped into storage at Bescot in June 2004 following a short stint on Sandite duties. It lingered in the yard at Bescot until transferred by road to EMR, Kingsbury, in March 2011, where finally it was cut up during September 2011.
* Under TOPs, D6700 took D6819's number (37119) and so D6819 was instead given the spare number 37283 - which would have gone to D6983 had the engine not been withdrawn due to accident damage in 1966.

The two small girls will be in their 40's by now and the sight of the local coal mine a distant memory, maybe they came from a mining family and today they take their own families to the country park.
Sadly, Deep Navigation Colliery closed on March 29th 1991, the associated washery stayed open for another 9 months so that the stockpile of coal could be removed. Today the site has been landscaped and is known as Parc Taff Bargoed.
37895 was built by English Electric as D6819, it went new to Cardiff Canton 27/03/1963, under TOPS it became 37283 and on being rebuilt, 37895, in 1985. The loco was withdrawn 10/04/2011 and cut at Kingsbury Metals 08/09/2011
