When I saw this teeny gem, I wasn't sure which end was up - it's very small, skipper sized. The threadlike tails looked like another set of antennae to my naked eye, but the big lens tells all. It's actually very different on the top side, a much deeper almost blue-gray, with the bright orange spot accents. After paging through my butterfly book, I've decided it is a Gray Hairstreak, "the most widespread hairstreak in North America". Can't say I've ever seen one before, widespread or not.
Chessie train RS97 ducks under the New York State Thruway in Wheatland, NY on June 12, 1980. At the time this was my favorite weekday line to catch as it had friendly crews and a pretty reliable schedule. I have always worked evenings, and the RS97 was usually good for an 8 to 9am departure out of Brooks Ave. I could usually chase the train to Leroy before I would have to head back home to get ready for work. Occasionally I could chase them as far as Warsaw or even Gainesville.
