Siberian ground squirrels in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, the photogenic animals can be found in a number of forests in and around Tilburg. The best known of these are the Wandelbos and the Oude Warande. It is not known exactly how these animals got here. There are two different stories from the 1970s that can explain it. The first is that animals escaped after being moved from the Tilburg zoo. The second option is that the animals hid in their dens during hibernation while the zoo was demolished. After the animals came out of hibernation, their cage was gone and they left for the Tilburg woods.

Siberische grondeekhoorns in Nederland.
In Nederland zijn de fotogenieke dieren te vinden in een aantal bossen in en rond Tilburg. De bekendste hiervan zijn het wandelbos en het Oude Warande. Hoe deze dieren hier gekomen zijn is niet precies bekend. Er zijn twee verschillende verhalen uit de jaren ’70 die het kunnen verklaren. De eerste is dat dieren ontsnapt zijn, nadat ze verhuisd werden uit de dierentuin van Tilburg. De tweede optie is dat de dieren in hun holen verscholen waren tijdens hun winterslaap, terwijl de dierentuin gesloopt werd. Nadat de dieren uit hun winterslaap kwamen was hun hok weg en vertrokken ze richting de Tilburgse bossen.

I have now almost reached the point where the North bank meets the West bank. That point is not possible to photograph from the path. because of the vegetation. If I continue on this generally west bound path, I will be home in less than 3miles (about 4.5 Km).
I have been lucky with the weather for 5th January 2022.

The lake's status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest is partly due to the rich marginal mire vegetation found along the southern shore of the water. Here you may find rare plants such as Bog Pondweed, Spike Rush and Round Leaved Sundew.
Wet woodland types can be found at the western end of the lake. These provide a natural transition between woodland and the water, which is particularly valuable to birds

Lunaria Annua.
This biennial plant comes in white or purple, and, apart from it's sweet-smelling flowers, is popular with flower arrangers for it's coin-shaped silvery translucent seed pods. Honesty is it's common name in the UK. Here it is , in flower at the moment, in my garden.

ISO 400 1/220th @ f/4 Focal length is equivalent to 300mm in 35mm format. This lens was manufactured by Nikon in the late 1970's as an AI lens but was subsequently modified to AIS by Nikon at a nominal cost, a service which they supplied at that time.
"Warum sieht man eigentlich immer nur männliche Fasane?" Diese Frage habe ich mir oft gestellt bevor ich angefangen habe Vögel zu fotografieren. Seitdem habe ich die Antwort gefunden, sie versteckt sich im heutigen Bild.
Komp. Info: Für gewöhnlich behalte ich das Kleinbild Bildformat von 3:2 immer bei. Das ist ein Relikt aus der Zeit als ich Dias für Überblendprojektion fotografiert habe: unterschiedliche Formate funktionieren damit nicht. Bei diesem Foto jedoch habe ich mich ziemlich schnell für ein 16:10 Format entschieden weil a) die Fasanen schön in einer Linie zu sehen sind und insbesonders b) ober- und unterhalb der Fasane ansonsten zu viel negativer Raum vorhanden wäre. Das Bild hat im normalen Kleinbildformat einfach nicht gewirkt.
‘Why do you only ever see male pheasants?’ I often asked myself this question before I started photographing birds. Since then I have found the answer, which can be seen in today's picture.
Comp. info: I usually keep the 35mm image format of 3:2. This is a relic from the time when I photographed slides for superimposed projection: different formats don't work with it. With this photo, however, I decided fairly quickly in favour of a 16:10 format because a) the pheasants can be seen nicely in a line and, in particular, b) there would otherwise be too much negative space above and below the pheasants. The picture simply didn't work in normal 35mm format.

This little fantail was being my best friend along the river path staying with me for quite a while as it flitted to and fro catching bugs etc..
I had the Pentax with me for which I don't have a particularly long lens (160mm = 100mm approx in 35mm format) but decided to try and photograph it as it was occasionally quite close...

Der Kernbeißer (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) ist die größte in Europa heimische Art der Finken (Fringillidae).
Die Schneiden des Oberschnabels und die ausgehöhlte Führung des Unterschnabels ermöglichen in Verbindung mit der entsprechenden Muskulatur das Aufspalten von Obstkernen, wozu ein erheblicher Druck aufgewendet werden muss.
