The High Street in Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd, North Wales.
Before the slate industry developed, the area now known as Blaenau Ffestiniog was a farming region, with scattered farms working the uplands below the cliffs of Dolgaregddu and Nyth-y-Gigfran. A few of these historic farmhouses survive at Cwm Bowydd, Gelli, Pen y Bryn and Cefn Bychan. Much of the land was owned by large estates.
During the 1860s and 1870s the slate industry in Blaenau Ffestiniog went through a large boom. The quarries expanded rapidly, as did the nascent town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The town gained its first church and first school and saw considerable ribbon development along the roads. By 1881, the town's population had soared to 11,274. The boom in the slate industry was followed by a significant decline. The 1890s saw several quarries lose money for the first time, and several failed entirely, including Cwmorthin and Nyth-y-Gigfran.
Although the slate industry partly recovered from the recession of the 1890s, it never fully recovered. The First World War saw many quarrymen join the Armed Forces, and production fell. There was a short post-war boom, but the long-term trend was towards mass-produced tiles and cheaper slate from Spain. Oakeley Quarry took over Cwmorthin, Votty & Bowydd and Diphwys Casson, while Llechwedd acquired Maenofferen. Despite this consolidation, the industry continued to decline. The Second World War saw a further loss of available workers. In 1946, the Ffestiniog Railway closed.
The slate quarries continued to decline steadily after 1950. The remaining quarries served by the Rhiwbach Tramway closed during the 1950s and 1960s. Oakeley closed in 1970, with the loss of many local jobs. It re-opened in 1974 on a much smaller scale and was worked until 2010. Maenofferen and Llechwedd continued to operate, but Maenofferen finally closed in 1998. Llechwedd is still a working quarry, working the David Jones part of Maenofferen (level two-and-a-half).
As the slate industry declined, the population of Blaenau Ffestiniog has also declined, to 4,875 in 2011. At the same time the tourism industry has become the town's largest employer. The revived Ffestiniog Railway and the Zip World Slate Caverns are popular tourist attractions, as is the Antur Stiniog downhill mountain biking centre. Recent attractions include the Zip World Titan zip-line site, which also now features the Bounce Below slate mine activity centre.

Premier Jason Kenney issued this statement on the arson attack that destroyed l’église de Saint-Jean-Baptiste and other recent attacks on churches.
“The Government of Alberta unequivocally condemns recent arson attacks that have targeted Christian churches across Canada and Alberta.
“Today in Morinville, l’église de Saint-Jean-Baptiste was destroyed in what appears to have been a criminal act of arson. This historic church was in the heart of Morinville and a key part of the spiritual life of Alberta's Francophone community.
“This is unacceptable in Alberta. It is unacceptable in Canada. These attacks targeting Christian churches are attempts to destroy the spiritual sites that are important to people of faith across Alberta, including many Indigenous people.
“The Canada we know is not one where hate-motivated arson attacks targeting religious communities are common place or allowed to continue.
“That's why today, Alberta’s government is announcing that we will double funding for the Alberta Security Infrastructure Program, from $1 million to $2 million annually, to help protect churches and other targets of hateful vandalism and violence. I have also instructed Justice Minister Kaycee Madu to work with ALERT and police chiefs across the province immediately to step up monitoring and protection of potential target sites.” (photography by Chris Schwarz/Government of Alberta)

Baker City Bronc and Bull Riding
An action packed weekend at this year's Baker City Bronc and Bull Riding, with some of the meanest bulls, toughest cowboys, and hardest working bull fighters we've seen in a long time at Saturday night's bull riding.
This two day rodeo event in Baker City is held on the 3rd weekend of July each year in conjunction with the annual Miners Jubilee celebration and features some of the best rodeo stock and toughest cowboy’s of any rodeo in Oregon, competing in just two events, bronc riding on Friday and bull riding on Saturday.

From late June to mid-July I surveyed osprey nests from Monmouth Beach south along the coast to Atlantic City. While conducting these surveys I collected trash found within and around 112 active osprey nests. The amount of trash is an eye opener to how much marine debris is out on the salt marsh and in our estuaries. We found all sorts of trash, most of it was plastic (bags, mylar balloons, ribbon, bottles) and a few other things like hats, a newspaper, a Croc, PVC pipe, and a crab trap.

Chemist TW Gissing (1829-1870) owned this shop from 1856 until his death. His eldest son, novelist George Gissing (1857-1903), was born in the family home to its rear.
The Victorian novelist George Gissing (1857-1903) was born on 22 November 1857 in Wakefield and lived as a boy in the house behind his father's chemist's shop in Thompson's Yard, just off Westgate.
George Gissing wrote 23 novels as well as two studies of Dickens, a travel book and numerous short stories. Among his best works are the semi-autobiographical The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft and New Grub Street. In the latter he writes about the problems of struggling authors and the trade of hack journalism.
Although after his father’s death Gissing never lived permanently in Wakefield, his recollections of his home town, its landscape and some of its citizens colour some of his short stories and novels (A Life's Morning, is set in a thinly disguised Wakefield).
