The former County Grammar School on Northgate Street in Bury St Edmunds a historic market town in Suffolk, England.

County Upper School traces its origins back to the Education Act 1902 that gave county councils the status of local education authorities, greatly expanding their powers and their expenditure. Within a few years it was normal for half a county's budget to be devoted to education and the West Suffolk County School was opened in Northgate Street in Bury St Edmunds. A large red brick building, the former Falconbury School and site of the original Northgate House, had been purchased for the purpose in 1904, then altered and improved. This original building was then extended in 1907. At this time it was co-educational (for both girls and boys), with separate playgrounds. In the early 1950s the school became the County Grammar School for Girls with eligible boys from Bury and its surrounding villages attending the King Edward VI Grammar School.

In 1964 the County Grammar School for Girls moved from its Northgate Street site to brand new premises at the end of Tollgate Lane (now known as Beetons Way) in north west Bury St Edmunds. The school premises in Northgate Street gradually became used as an annex to the West Suffolk College until 1988. Today, the old red brick building forms part of the Northgate Street Business Park, housing, amongst other enterprises, a dance school, a chiropractic clinic, the headquarters of the East of England Ambulance Service and the East of England Museums Libraries and Archives.

The original West Suffolk County School crest, seen above the old Northgate Street building entrance, consist of a gold cross fleury between five martlets on a blue shield and were the arms of Edward the Confessor, who in the 11th century granted land to the abbey of St Edmund, and those of the old West Suffolk County Council. The contemporary County Upper School crest has four birds around a cross surmounted by the Saxon Crown of St Edmund, the last King of East Anglia. The blue sweaters with an all gold crest worn by today’s pupils echo the colours of Edward the Confessor and are used by the school sports teams and on the school flag.

This image was scanned from a postcard in an album belonging to Francis Richard (Frank) Moore (1878-1964), whose family was based at Bishop's Bridge near Maitland, New South Wales at the time the postcard was sent. Mr Moore was a teacher who taught in schools in northern NSW and in Sydney. The postcards were collected at the turn of the twentieth century.

After Mr Moore's death, the album passed to his sister, Eliza Jane Keily, née Moore (1890-1968). The image is published here with permission of the family.

One can assume that these workmen would have visited the Lord Melbourne (which is in the background) after their exertions at the petrol station.

Originally on the opposite (northern) side of Melbourne Street to its present location, the Lord Melbourne Inn was established in 1851. Changing to the Lord Melbourne Hotel, it moved to the southern side in 1869.

'QUOITS

A quoit match was played on Saturday, May 7, at the Lord Melbourne Hotel, between Messrs. EL Goldfinch and Joe Ellis for the championship of South Australia. The game was 51 points up, and resulted in a win for Goldfinch by 1 point. Great interest was taken in the match.'

All Albertans will soon be able to receive a second dose of vaccine, helping fully protect them and all Albertans from COVID-19.

Alberta’s vaccine rollout continues to reach new milestones, with more than 2.8 million doses administered to date and 63.4 per cent of Albertans aged 12-plus having received at least one dose.

Albertans will be able to schedule second-dose appointments in the order they received their first doses.

Anyone vaccinated in March or earlier can book their second dose starting June 1.

Anyone vaccinated in April can book their second dose starting June 14.

Anyone vaccinated in May can book their second dose starting June 28.

A single dose of COVID-19 vaccine offers at least 80 per cent protection against severe outcomes, including hospitalization and death. However, second doses are needed to get the best and most long-lasting protection against the virus.

Alberta is a national leader in second doses, with 10.4 per cent of eligible Albertans already fully protected with two doses.

“Every Albertan who has received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine will be able to book their second dose by the end of the month. This will provide Albertans with even more protection as we get ready to be open for summer and get back to normal. Please do your part by booking your second doses so we can beat COVID-19, once and for all.” said Premier Jason Kenney.

“First doses have brought Albertans much-needed relief to our families, our communities and our health system, but two doses are necessary for full protection. We are staggering the second-dose rollout to start with those who received their first dose earliest. Thank you to the AHS workers, pharmacists and physicians who continue to work tirelessly to administer these vaccines and to all Albertans who have chosen to get protected.” Said Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health.

“I strongly urge all Albertans to book their second-dose appointments in the coming weeks and months. It is critical that everyone who has received their first dose shows up for their second. In the meantime, we all need to continue to follow public health measures to keep driving transmission down.” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health.

Baker City Bronc and Bull Riding

An action packed weekend at this year's Baker City Bronc and Bull Riding, with some of the meanest Broncs, toughest cowboys, and hardest working pick up men we've seen in a long time at Friday night's Bronc riding.

This two day rodeo event in Baker City is held on the 3rd weekend of July each year in conjunction with the annual Miners Jubilee celebration and features some of the best rodeo stock and toughest cowboy’s of any rodeo in Oregon, competing in just two events, bronc riding on Friday and bull riding on Saturday.
