Rangers use a Eurocopter Squirrel to reach parts of the vast Garamba National Park which are inaccessible by road. The helicopter was also used to evacuate injured rangers after a firefight in October in which three rangers and a colonel from the Congolese army were killed. The area where the rangers were ambushed was to thick with bush for the helicopter to so the South African pilot Frank Molteno dropped a homemade sling out of the cockpit with six loops attached for the rangers to wrap under their chests, so he could fly them to safety.
In February 2021 we decided to drive to the Mendocino Coast to spend a few days away from home in Auburn. On the way se stopped off at the Develan Wildlife Refuge. Although the gates were locked on account of covid it was an easy crawl-under to view and photograph the migratory bird flyway.
