The Virginia Rails long toes make it well suited for its environment of mud flats and wetlands with a good supply of emerged vegetation.
During the mating season a pair will build a number of nests adjacent to the one they use to incubate the eggs in. After hatching the chicks will only stay with the parent birds for about 7 days.
This species appears far better suited for walking on mud with its long toes than swimming but they will swim across open water and if threatened will dive underwater where it propels itself with its wings.
These birds are rarely hunted even though they are considered a game species in some states and provinces.
Being as secretive and solitary as they are they can be a challenge to find and sometimes we hear them and never do see them. Chances of finding them does improve in morning and evening since they are most active at dawn and dusk. They will feed on open flats as long as there is dense vegetation nearby that they can scurry to and they feed hurriedly when in the open.
This adult bird is primping and preening in the cattail reeds in early morning at the H. R. Frink Conservation Area.

Well, the ground hog of Punxsutawney may have been less accurate than expected in predicting the onset of spring. As I lay here in 30 degree weather on the wet mudflats of coastal NJ, my fingers are numb from the cold. But, I'm not leaving anytime soon, for it's a beautifully sunny day, and what I see across the water makes me overjoyed. A pair of common loons are fishing the intercoastal waters, and I realize that this spectacularly feathered common loon may be a better candidate for the groundhog's replacement. During the non breeding season, these agile divers sport a coat of drab grey feathers. In breeding season they transform into tantalizingly beautiful birds. In winter, they can be found along coastlines, but migrate to inland, northern, fresh water lakes to breed. His presence, this weekend, on the coastal waterways of New Jersey makes me think that winter is not yet ready to release its grip on the north. Perhaps, in the future, I will look toward the coastal waterways for predictions of an early spring, rather than wait for those of a cute but infrequently accurate and overgrown rodent! #CommonLoon
