New South Wales Government Railways C32 class no. 3237 "Lachlan" at Goulburn Railway Museum. She's had her "telegram" from the Queen.

The C32 class was a class of steam locomotives built for the New South Wales Government Railways of Australia.

Introduction

When the new Chief Commissioner, Edward Eddy, took office in 1888, he was anxious to have additional locomotives manufactured within the Colony, and the Government sought the formation of a manufacturing company in New South Wales by interested parties. When this failed, designs were prepared prior to inviting tenders in England.

Beyer, Peacock and Company was selected to build the new locomotives. The first batch of 50 locomotives were delivered between February 1892 and July 1893. They became known as the Manchester Engines.

At the request of the Railway Commissioners, the builders altered the last two engines of the first batch to operate as compounds, but these did not prove satisfactory and during 1901 were converted to 2-cylinders. The particular compound arrangement was never used in another locomotive, before or since.

Further orders over the 19 years saw 191 locomotives built the last being delivered in April 1911. The initial 50 were built with six wheel tenders, the remainder with eight wheel bogie tenders. Many of the originals were later equipped with bogie tenders, however a number of the class kept the shorter tenders to enable them to be turned on the 50-foot (15.24 m) turntables at certain locations.

The final engine was built with a superheater, and tests showed a significant improvement in performance; as result the remaining 190 engines were similarly fitted as they became due for boiler renewal between 1914 and 1939.

The first passenger locomotives used on the Trans-Australian Railway the 26 strong Commonwealth Railways G class, were of similar design, and the class leader is preserved at the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide.

Into service

When first introduced, the class was assigned to the Northern and Southern mail and express trains. Following the strengthening of the Wagga Wagga Viaduct in 1901, they worked the full length of the Main South line from Sydney to Albury, the express covering the 621 km in 12 hours and 35 minutes, including 14 stops.

With the arrival of even larger engines from 1909 to handle the important mail and express trains, the P class were redeployed to other passenger services. In November 1929 they were used on the inaugural Newcastle Flyers. They also began hauling the Caves Express to Mount Victoria and the South Coast Daylight Express to Bomaderry.

Apart from some very light country branch lines, the class worked throughout the state. They worked almost all South Coast line passenger services right up until the end of steam. They were equally at home on commuter services to Campbelltown or Richmond; on Newcastle suburban trains as far as Singleton and Dungog; on country branch line mixed or goods trains or even the Riverina Express from Narrandera to Griffith.

In the 1950s it was found that the original low frames of the class were cracking causing most of the class to be reframed with higher frames

Last years & demise

The first of the class to be withdrawn was 3264 following an accident at Otford in July 1956. Following the arrival of the 48 class diesels from 1959 withdrawals began in earnest. On 24 July 1971 the last regularly steam-hauled passenger train in New South Wales was hauled by 3246 from Newcastle to Singleton. In December 1971, 3229 (a shunting locomotive at Goulburn Depot) was the last of its class to be withdrawn.

The member of the class which attained the highest distance travelled in its life was 3210, with a figure of 4,185,685 kilometres (2,600,864 mi) which was also the highest distance travelled by any New South Wales Wales.,

During the federal scout camp around the Napf, which lasted from 25 July to 6 August 1994 and attracted more than 20,000 participants, there was a large amount of travel to and from the camp. This led to some remarkable train compositions. The picture from Friday 5th August shows the 9-car special train no. 32034 in the 25-promille descent above the Gammenthal stop. It takes the participants from Willisau via Huttwil-Ramsei-Langnau back to Bern. Between the 7 EW I "B" of the SBB, there are 2 BLS first-class coaches in fourth and fifth place on the train, but these have been declassed for this purpose.

First, let's take a look at what we need. The different types of pieces needed are shown in the picture.

Tree bark:

500 x Droid Arm (30377) (dark brown)

200 x Axe (3835) (black)

Building guides:

12 x Round Brick 1x1 (3062b) (brown, black or dark brown)

12 x Cone 1x1 (4589b) (brown or black)

12 x Bar 4L (30374) (black)

30 x Round Plate 1x1 (4073)

3 x Plate 4x4 (3031) (any color)

2 x Plate 6x6 (3958) (any color)

8 x Jumper Plate 1x2 (3794b) (any color)

1 x Jumper Plate 2x2 (87580) (any color)

Support structure:

1 x Plate 2x2 (3022) (any color)

1 x Cone 3x3x2 (6233) (black)

5 x Technic Connector #2 (32034) (black)

5 x Technic Connector #3 (32034) (black)

15 x Technic Connector 2L (6538c) (black)

2 x Technic Connector Triple (10288) (dark brown)

25 x Technic Axle 2L (32062) (black)

2 x Technic Axle 3L (4519) (black)

2 x Technic Axle Pin 3L (18651) (black)

2 x Technic Connector with Axle Hole (32039) (black)

10 x Hinge Cylinder (30552) (black)

10 x Hinge Plate 1x2 (60471) (black)

10 x Bar 1L with Clip Mechanical Claw (48729) (black)

Foliage:

150-200 x Leaves 5x6 (2417) (any color)

10+ x Plate 1x2 (3023) (same as leaves or black or dark brown)

Now this is only a rough list of what we need. Many of the items are not strictly needed and can usually be replaced by something similar or even omitted altogether.

The droid arms and axes are obviously critical to the tree design. The droid arms are not exchangeable, but the axes can be replaced by regular bars if desired. Axes are a lot cheaper than bars, but is somewhat more limited in terms of color. The axes also gives a different texture to the tree. If you do use bars, 3L bars are the easiest to replace with, but also the most expensive. 4L and 6L bars can also be used, but this will alter the design process significantly. The 6L bars also have the little protruding rings which further complicates things. I would go with axes :)

The items for the support structure can be varied depending on how you want to design your tree. The items listed are what is needed to build the particular design in this tutorial, but as these elements are generally cheap I would advise to get hold of a range of technic connectors with different angles so you can design trees in whatever shape you would like.

For the the foliage you can choose whatever color you would like. In this tutorial we will be using green and dark green. If you for some reason would like to use 3x4 leaves that is also possible, but I certainly prefer to work with 5x6 leaves and will not be using them in this tutorial.

That is it for the pieces. Let's start building!

A354 Portland Beach Road.

A bit of a lengthy story, but one I will never forget.

A month shy of my 18th birthday, I decided that I was going to take Amtrak #7, the Empire Builder" from Milwaukee to the Twin Cites and back. No hotel - just "lay over" in the depot. My primary reason is I wanted to ride as much Milwaukee Road double track as possible as Soo was hacking it apart on the river sub, and the Tomah Sub was next.

The afternoon of August 23, 1990, I boarded #7 in Milwaukee on a pleasant clear afternoon and once aboard spent most of the trip in the observation car. Around 10:30pm, I headed to my more comfortable Superliner seat.

I had my scanner with me and was listening to radio traffic through my headphones as we cruised along. Lights in the train were dimmed and people settled in for the evening. At exactly 11:00pm, the train went into full emergency and immediately we lost HEP. A car attendant walking with a passenger right next to my aisle seat at the moment it happened yelled "Hold on!". Quite an experience going from full track speed down to zero in a matter of seconds....

Listening to the scanner, after some initial chaos and calling the DS, they figured out what was going on. The train broke in two at MP358.5 - those of you more familiar with the River Sub can fill me in on the exact siding location. When we hit the switches for the new single track sidings, we would bounce something fierce. I distinctly remember several "shakings" at other switches prior to this event. This particular extreme "ride" over a switch ended up causing a car with a faulty pin lifter to bounce enough that it uncoupled the car.

The locomotives and the rest of the head end of the train backed up to couple with us. The conductor had to walk back behind the train to see if we "lost" someone that may have been between the cars when we broke apart....imagine having to do that! Thankfully no one was in between the cars, likely because it was late in the evening with fewer people moving about the train. An hour later at 12:05am on Friday the 24th, we were on our way back at full track speed.

At 1:06am we amazingly had a second separation at MP405/Dunn Yard! Listening to the scanner the problem was lead car #32034, an ex-Santa Fe sleeper. This time the HEP connector was smashed on the tracks, so we ended up with no power on the back half of the train for the duration of the trip.

At 1:28am they had us back together and now under a 40mph restriction to Midway station. We finally arrived at 2:05am which is about 2 hours late. It was decided to remove the troublesome car from the train, so switching moves commenced. At 3:18am, #7 was finally on it's way.

I waited the few hours between then and the arrival of #8 for my trip back in a dark, quiet and empty depot all to myself.

What an experience!! The event even made it to the newspapers. Quite the trip for my first trip on the "Broken" Builder!

And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
