"On 1 July 1899, the Royal Artillery was divided into three groups: the Royal Horse Artillery of 21 batteries and the Royal Field Artillery of 95 batteries comprised one group, while the coastal defence, mountain, siege and heavy batteries were split off into another group named the Royal Garrison Artillery of 91 companies.[1] The third group continued to be titled simply Royal Artillery, and was responsible for ammunition storage and supply." wikipedia
In 1914, the Royal Horse Artillery provided light, mobile guns in support of the cavalry. It was the senior arm of the artillery.
Each Brigade of Cavalry had one RHA battery attached. Each battery comprised 5 officers, 200 men, 228 horses and six 13-pounder field guns.
"The Brigade was the basic tactical unit of the Field Artillery of the British army in the Great War of 1914-1918. It was composed of a Brigade Headquarters and a number of batteries of guns or howitzers. At full establishment, a brigade of 18-lbr field guns consisted of 795 men of whom 23 were officers. For a 4.5-inch howitzer brigade, this was 755 and 22."
"Siege Batteries (Royal Garrison Artillery) were equipped with heavy howitzers, sending large calibre high explosive shells in high trajectory, plunging fire.The usual armaments were 6 inch, 8 inch and 9.2 inch howitzers, although some had huge railway- or road-mounted 12 inch howitzers. As British artillery tactics developed, the Siege Batteries were most often employed in destroying or neutralising the enemy artillery, as well as putting destructive fire down on strongpoints, dumps, store, roads and railways behind enemy lines.

"In November 1918 16 Bde RHA consisted of A,Q, and U Batteries RHA, each armed with six 18 pdr guns, and was serving with the Fourth Army in France. This meant that it was a reinforcing unit which could be deployed anywhere in the Fourth Army's sector to add strength to the artillery corps and or divisional artillery for a particular operation."
"Lieut. Leslie Parry Huggins, RHA: Served with 'A' Battery (Chestnut Troop), RHA, from June 1917 to the end of the war. In the second half of 1917 'A' Battery, took part in trench warfare at Vadencourt, Cambrai and Epeny. In early 1918 it helped to cover the withdrawal of the 66th Division. It was present at the capture of Villers Bretoneux and during the summer, Morlaincourt and Hamel. It fought in the battles of Amiens, Bapaume, Epeny, Cambrai and St. Quentin in 1918. Towards the end of the year it took part in the general offensive which broke the Hindenburg Line. It fired its last round at Orrs on 4 Nov 18."

"‘The position was now as follows. The 1st Divn had pushed the enemy back to a line running along the top of a ridge running from the Butte of Warlencourt practically due east. This ridge prevented our seeing the enemy’s approaches and support position in Le Barque. On the other hand from Loupart Wood the whole of our approaches and support trenches were in full view of the enemy, as far back as High Wood. Across these two miles no one could move in daylight without being seen by the enemy, and there was practically no position to put our field guns forward of High Wood. The enemys’ front line consisted of two trenches - Gird Line and Gird Support - with a forward trench on top of the ridge, called on the left ‘ Butte Trench and on the right ‘Hook Sap’. Our front line Snag Trench and Maxwell Trench lay this side of the ridge and about two hundred yards away from the German forward trench’. (Capt Francis Buckley)
