Smew (male)
The smew is a small sawbill, a group of ducks named for their serrated bills. They're diving ducks, which spend a lot of time under the water hunting for food - mostly aquatic insects in summer and small fish in winter.
Smews are winter visitors to the UK, with most birds not arriving until at least December and leaving again by the middle of March. They spend the summer in the taiga forests of northern Scandinavia and Russia, where they nest around lakes, ponds, rivers and other water-logged places with lots of trees. The females lay their eggs in holes high up tree trunks, lining their nest with soft down feathers. They often use old cavities excavated by black woodpeckers, though they'll happily use large nest boxes instead. The ducklings will jump down to the ground at just a day or two old and make their way to the nearest water.

Lyon Xpress 44841 from Antwerpen is not really treated as an international express on 28/05/2021. Third stop was just before Paliseul where a single line working started until Bertrix.
Thanks to Brian I had a big heads up about CL2 running south to Binghamton. In fantastic afternoon sunshine they cross the Chenango River at Chenango Bridge. Show was over and it was time for beverages!
The combination of snow, wind and very low temperatures meant rail traffic coming to an almost complete stand still in south-west Belgium on 08/02/2021. 41700 from Bettembourg (L) to Zeebrugge got rerouted via line 124 and Brussels instead of following its original route via Jurbise, Ath, Tournai, Moeskroen, Kortrijk and Brugge.
What a surprise I had been looking at the photos from my day at the Los Angeles Arboretum with friends Lou and Chris. I don't even remember shooting this beauty, a Common Yellowthroat, and a new bird for me. It's cropped a lot but holds up pretty well, even viewed large.
I'm absolutely raking out east this trip exemplified by this shot based on a Grundy tip.
CL2 went Syracuse to Binghamton last Wednesday with a quad set of yellow jackets. The crew took a lunch break in Cortland and left town as the sky cleared out which made for a great chase south including this shot north of Messengerville, NY. We're on the former DL&W here.
